Training Day 4

What did I Learn?

Today I learned how to use the Sketch app which was taught by Mandy. I’m really excited to use the app because of its user friendliness. I also learned, after many revisions, that proofreading copy is VERY important. When I was designing the Guidebook I focused more on the design part, rather than the entire finished piece which includes copy. I learned that its also my job to make sure the copy makes sense.

What were my challenges?

To be honest, today was challenge free. My jitters were absent from me!

How did we help each other?

Today we communicated very well. I not only listened to critique, I also gave critique. In a design team, each voice counts, friendly critique makes good designs.

  1. Friendly critique makes good designs. I can see that on a poster.
What useful advice. Good way to reflect daily on what design advice did you seek and what advice did you offer.

The discussion about borders and equipment limitations, and being intentional about the design for web vs for print. Not only who is your audience, but how familiar are you with the replication equipment, and with the production manager. Have you taken the time to introduce yourself and also consider how you will develop a relationship over time? What is the demeanor that you carry through on your email requests? How do you follow up, in-person and/or on line to acknowledge and appreciate fine work.

Proof-reading copy, out loud. What voice is it in; are phrases consistent for tense and type (noun or verb). When to outreach and enlist assistance, especially for complex content. When to step back and work on a different project or talk a walk, clear your head if you are on a tight deadline. There is no one answer, rather it is the strategies you need to consider when working on a complex or multiple projects within a similar time frame.

  2. Proofread everything you ever write and are given to read. To read something and know that there aren’t no spelling mistakes is the best feeling. I hope you get a chance to practice with the Sketch app on something you are working on this coming semester!
