“Write your worries in the sand, carve your blessings in stone.” – Robert F. Kennedy
The assignment was to select an inspirational quote and creatively use our surroundings, to explore, find, or design the letters. I chose this quote because I wanted to create a theme related to the beach. The quote feels heartwarming to me as it conveys a meaningful message: as we face struggles and concerns in daily life, appreciating ourselves and practicing gratitude can encourage us to continue our path.
To create the letters, I used small stones, shells, and wrote in the sand at Coney Island and Rockaway Beach. I also photographed ocean waves approaching some of the letters as decoration. It was a long and repetitive process, but it added a unique element to the design.
The final setup was created in Adobe InDesign, with each photo sized into a 2-inch square. Since some letters were repeated, I arranged them at different angles for variety. For the background, I chose a butter-yellow color to complement the sand.
