Participation Rubric for Discussions
Students must post their individual reply for a potential 6 points and reply to two of their classmate’s discussion postings, for a potential 2 points per response (10 points total per discussion).
Responses to topics
To earn the full 6 points for a reply to each discussion topic, the student
- Replied to the posting before or on the due date
- Posting was responsive and significant, comments or questions were posted that enhanced the discussion, or helped the discussion flow
- When a student had not posted initially, comments provided evidence that the student had read at least some postings from classmates
- Posting showed ample evidence of having completed the readings or reviewed information assigned in relation to the discussion posting
- The posting was constructive, and differences of opinion were expressed in a mutual and respectful manner
To earn 4 points for each topic, the student
- Replied to the posting before or on the due date
- Posting was responsive to the question and significant
- Posting showed some evidence that the student had reviewed or completed the readings or reviewed information assigned in relation to the discussion posting
- The posting was constructive, and differences of opinion were expressed in a mutual and respectful manner
To earn 2 points, the participant
- Replied to the posting before or on the due date, but neglected one or more of the other elements
- Posting was academic in tone
Responses to Classmates’ Postings
To earn the full 4 points for a response to classmates, the student
- Posted a response to their classmates before or on the due date
- Posting was responsive and significant, comments or questions were posted that enhanced the discussion, or helped the discussion flow
- Posting provided evidence that the student had thoughtfully read their classmates’ postings
- Posting showed ample evidence of having completed the readings or reviewed information assigned in relation to the discussion posting
- The posting was constructive, in an academic tone, and differences of opinion were expressed in a mutual and respectful manner
To earn 2 points for a response to classmates, the student
- Posted a response to their classmates before or on the due date.
- Posting provided evidence that the student had read their classmates’ postings
- Posting showed some evidence of having completed the readings or reviewed information assigned in relation to the discussion posting
- The posting was constructive, in an academic tone, and differences of opinion were expressed in a mutual and respectful manner
To earn 1 point for a response to classmates, the student
- Posted a response to their classmates before or on the due date
- The posting was constructive, in an academic tone, and differences of opinion were expressed in a mutual and respectful manner
