Class 2 8/31:

Review of outlining, brainstorming, and drafting. Review of essay structure and thesis statements. Explanation about peer workshops and review conferences.

HW: Please read and do discussion board post for Gloria Anzaldua, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”and watch Jamila Lyiscott “3 Ways to Speak English.” In addition, please submit your Education Narrative outline to Openlab by Sept 7th.

Class 3 9/7:

Peer workshop and review conferences for Education Narrative Outline. Discussion about “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” and “3 Ways to Speak English.”

HW: Please read and discussion board post for Donald Murray, “All Writing is Autobiography” and Yolonda Sealey-Ruiz, “Getting to Here from There.”

Class 4 9/12: 

Discussion about reflective writing. Review about Reflection Assignments. Discussion about “All Writing is Autobiography” and “Getting to Here from There.” Review and discussion about your Education Narrative you may about your first drafts.

HW: Please submit the first draft of your Education Narrative (2 pages) to Blackboard by Sept 14th.

Class 5 9/14:

Conferences and peer review for Education Narrative first draft.

 

HW: Please read and discussion board post for Jeff Anderson, “Sharing Our Vulnerabilities as Writers” and Nancy Sommer and Laura Saltz, “The Novice as Expert”.

Class 6 9/19:

Discussion about “Sharing Our Vulnerabilities as Writers “and “The Novice as Expert”. Discussion about revision, editing, and proofreading.

HW: Submit the final draft of the Education Narrative and Part One Reflection by Sept 21st.

Class 7 9/21:

Review of Bibliography and New Genre assignment.

HW: Please read and discussion board post for Alison C. Witte, “Research Starts with Answers” and Emily A. Wierszewski, “Research Starts with a Thesis Statement.” Please find them within the same book linked in the course materials.

Class 8 9/28:

Discussion about “Research Starts with Answers” and “Research Starts with a Thesis Statement.”

HW: Try to develop a question you want your New Genre assignment to answer. Then, develop a thesis that would answer that question and post to Openlab by Oct 3rd.

Class 9 9/29:

Education Narrative conferences.

HW:   Reddit and Podcasts packet. Please review the links.

Class 10 10/3:

Discussion Reddit and Podcasts. Discussion about discourse communities. Thesis and question review for New Genre assignment.

HW: Respond to either the Reddit discussion board posting or the podcasts one on Openlab.

Class 11 10/12:  

Discussion about critical analysis. Discussion about research citation formats and annotated bibliographies.

HW: Please read and discussion board post for Bucher and Manning “Bringing Graphic Novels into a School’s Curriculum” and “Schools are Killing Curiosity.”

Class 12 10/17: Review of rhetoric and audience.

Class 13 10/19: Library research session. Students will find one source that ties into their New Genre assignment

HW: Please post a link to the piece you will use for your New Genre assignment and write an analysis for it and how you will use it to Openlab. Continue finding pieces for your Bibliography assignment. In addition, begin writing your Bibliography assignment first draft. The first draft should be for at least 2 sources.

Class 14 10/24:

Discussion and review of Bibliography assignment.

HW:  Bibliography assignment first draft Post to Blackboard by Oct 26th. The first draft should be for at least 2 sources.

Class 15 10/26:

Conferences and Peer Review for your Bibliography first drafts.

HW: Continue writing your Bibliography assignments.

Class 16 10/31:

Conferences about Midterm grades.

HW: Please submit the final draft of the Bibliography assignment by Nov 2nd to Blackboard.

Class 17 11/2:

Review of New Genre assignment.

HW: Part Two Reflection submit by Nov 7th to Blackboard.
