An Introduction of Our Thoughts and Frames of Reference
Some words to begin the semester:
- ENG1101-LC05 is not just a class, but a way of thinking and experiencing.
- We donāt just cover material, we explore ideas with a mind toward transforming ourselves.
- We donāt just produce assignments, we approach challenges–and ones that are expertly-matched to our weaknesses and strengths.
- The work we do right here, right now, and continue to do directly manifests our future.
Over the next 15 weeks, you will learn a lot about writing, but you will learn more about yourself as a writer, as a communicator, as a student, and as a person of your worldāwhoever that person (and whatever that world) may be.
What I’m saying is that this is not just a course, but a journey and we are on it together. Write a paragraph about yourself. This is not your typical yada yada introduction. Chances are that was some blow-off ‘ish. I want to really know who you are and why youāre here. Seriously, why are you here? NO SERIOUSLY, STOP WITH THE BASIC SH*T, WE ALL KNOW YOU WANT THE GRADE, OR THIS IS JUST WHAT YOU WERE TOLD TO DO, BUT WHY ARE YOU HERE???
Now that we understand each other, add another paragraph that explains what you plan to do with your time this semester, and why that is valuable to you. Write whatever, as long as itās about you and itās relevant and somewhat interesting.

Hello, my name is Temia Collymore. Yes, I’m late! Iām a freshman student completing ENG 1101. I live in Brooklyn. I’m a foodie and I love to try new foods. I enjoy baking and pastry arts. I’ve been baking from young and love cooking shows . I read recipe books for new ideas and try experimenting with them. In City Tech, I plan on pursuing my career as a baker or a chef. I have several years of experience in the kitchen and help my mother with her food business. I chose the major of Hospitality Management because it covers a wide range of the industry and opens my eyes to more opportunities in this field. I am very confident in myself as far as working in this field and I believe I will be successful after completing my years at City Tech. I am hoping to complete my years within the 4 year range, that is my biggest goal!
Hi my name is Sofia Sotelo and I live in East Elmhurst. When I was young I watched so many cooking shows and cooking competitions which made me get into cooking but I liked to bake desserts more but then I started realizing that baking was more of a hobby for me when I went to some baking pastries classes. Then I was introduced to event planning by one of my aunts who works as an event planner and I just saw how she would organize events for her clients then at the end when she finishes organizing the event to see the smile and satisfaction in the personās face touched me. The reason I am here is because I want to see if event planning is for me or if something else in the hospitality industry is for me. To add on, I am here to get my degree in hospitality management and work on a job where I am going to enjoy.
My semester here at City Tech I plan to learn more about the hospitality industry. Also, I would like to improve my writing skills in this english class because like I mentioned to you, I am bad when it comes to writing. In addition, I would like to get better at analyzing texts and just get to fully understand a reading because sometimes I get lost but continue reading. Finally, my plan not only for this semester is to pass all my classes.
Hi, my name is Jadira Bermudez and I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. From a young age I was always intrigued with anything cooking or baking related and thatās why I decided to major in Hospitality Management at City Tech. I knew by the beginning of my senior year that this was something I was serious about and nobody could have told me otherwise. The reason Iām here is because I want to become the best chef or pasty chef I can be. I want to be able to show the people that doubted me that this can be a career and that this will be the best choice Iāve ever made. The reason why Iām in ENG 1101 is because writing is my academic weakness and I want to make that this weakness will become something I know Iāll be strong at. I feel once I get confident with my writing skills Iāll be able to reach my goal way sooner. The goal of owning my own restaurant is going to be really hard to achieve but I know that the classes and professors at City Tech well be a big help with helping me on my journey to success.
Jadira, I wouldn’t say weakness, but I would say you do lack confidence. I’m sure you are already a better writer than when you wrote this.

My name is Milly Escobar and I’ve lived all my life in Elmhurst, New York. As a child I started gaining interest in the baking industry and I even started watching many TV shows including Cake boss and Dc Cupcakes. . Even when I was as young as 7 years old I started baking, and its become a hobby ever since. When my senior year came up I started to realize that the hospitality management would be the perfect fit for me. Not only will this major will allow me to gain real-life experience but it’ll allow me to understand what goes on behind the scenes. I came to City Tech to gain knowledge in a major that I hope to pursue when I’m older, a career that I know I won’t get tired of. Im here to give college a shot because I am thankful to have the opportunity to a higher education. Although I do love the baking industry I know I am very intrigued in everything the hospitality management industry has to offer. Currently I have very little knowledge about this major but in the future I’ll be more aware of what it has to offer and I’ll see where the best fit for me is!
My name is ZiYu Zhang, and I was born in China. Growing up I never expects that one day I would move to New York, so I did not have any English background before coming to New York. When I move to New York during the age of 10, I had a hard time learning the language. Even though I eventually adapt to reading and writing English, there are many problems that I want to fix during my time in this course. For instance, my vocabularies are very limited, I want to be able to utilize different vocabularies to make my writings more professional. In addition, I have trouble organizing my ideas to present it in the writing. For example, I can have many ideas written down before starting an essay, but when I start the essay, it is hard for me to convert those ideas into a proper sentence. During my time in this course I want to be able to understand the concepts of writing, improve my vocabulary, and get use to college writing.
My name is Gissell Catano, born in New York as well as raised although Iāve lived in other places such as Colombia, Virginia and Florida. If Iām honest just a few months ago I had no idea what I wanted to do, not even a little bit. I kept stressing out because I knew that I had to choose in order to go to the right college. As a result, my guidance counselor tried to help me as much by asking which was my favorite subject and what I liked to do. My answer was Spanish class. I explained to her how much Iād like to learn other languages besides Spanish and English and that I liked to help other people like when I volunteered for the school to host or help translate to parents on important events. She also remembered that I love traveling so she proposed the hospitality and tourism major. I researched more about this major and I wasnāt really sure but now Iām here to give it a chance and explore my options. I also know that I have to learn all the basics and one of them is writing because thatās a form of communication. There are possibilities of me not ending up in this major but what I do know for sure is that no matter where I go I will always need writing skills in order to communicate with others and thatās why I am here, to learn.
Exploring your options. I love that. In fact, I’d say that you should never stop.

My name is Abigail Salazar, born and raised in corona queens. Throughout the ages 6-16 I was sure that becoming a pastry chef was my it job that what I had to do. I had begged my parents to allow my to go to long island city high school since it has a culinary program. They wanted me to go to aviation because for them trying to become a party chef is nothing in the world. I pushed my way and I’ve had the best experiences of my life. Both of my culinary teachers have done so much for me, i’ve learned so much about the food industry. My last internship made me realize i want to pursue in jus working in the kitchen it doesn’t have to do with just pastry. It was just making cookies or doing mise en place, it was cleaning, cutting vegetables, helping out in other stations that needed help, the place was busy and I loved it, every single minute was used well. Also there was tasters š who doesn’t like tasting food. I know this major isn’t going for culinary but its in the industry. I can see myself running a hotel or managing a restaurant.
Abi — I love working in the kitchen and I think those skills translate to so many different kinds of work for people that are intellectually curious and willing to learn new things. Wherever you end up, your love of food and how it is prepared will follow.

My name is Dayneanda kendall.I have such a unique name that I have learned to be proud of. As a career I want to become a chef then own a chain of restaurants around the world. As a kid from a Caribbean background I have a different accent from others, which makes people have trouble to understand me sometimes for e.g. my grandmother and she has a Caribbean background as well and she has trouble acknowledging what I am saying because I also talk low,I can be honest and say I am a shy child. If I would like to own these restaurants I need to learn the professional basics of speech and writing, so I can do well in business meetings. I love family and I want to make them proud of me, which is why I am here. I am here to improve on my confidence in writing, my dialect and learn more vocabulary words which I lack in using most of the time. Sir Corbett I am here for your help into improve myself as a individual this semester.
My name is Erick Aponte. Born in New York, had no idea what Iām gonna learn until I found Hospitality Management. I was thinking about becoming a manager but I needed to improve my writing, communication to the next level. So Iām in college freshman year and came upon a class called ENG 1101 and asked myself ā I didnāt came to ENG 1101-LCO5 just for a gradeā. I came here to get an idea on how to improve my writing skills, vocabulary words, understand what Iām typing, and find a easier way to communicate with others. Iām shy too so this class will make me less shy to others when I start communicating with random people. This class will help me a lot because Iām learning about hospitality management. Ima become a manager in the future so Ima use all the information I got from college and use it in the real world when I become one. Thatās why I came here to learn more about writings skills with you professor.
That’s a good start, Erick! Of course, you are going to learn far, far more than you came here to learn. So much so, it’s going to…change you. Maybe right now, you see being a manager as the limit of what you are capable of. Maybe you’re right. But, I’m hoping you start thinking a bit bigger. Why do you want to manage people? What will you have them do? What vision will you task them to fulfilling? Will you manage them because you are a successful entrepreneur providing for their livelihoods? We don’t know the answer to these questions yet, but they are worth pondering.
