Before class on Thursday, copy-and-paste your planning memo for Project 3, Photography and Photosharing in a comment made to this blog post. Remember, we will use this memo as the basis for our in-class work during Thursday’s class, so it’s vitally important to complete it in time for our next meeting. Also, we will discuss chapter 5, “Online Language and Social Interaction” from Jones and Hafner at the beginning of Thursday’s class.

Key elements:
1. Content ID is an automated system that searches for copyrighted material that has been submitted by rights holders and issues copyright strikes against channels. However, YouTube does not verify any copyright strikes.
2. A few examples of these are the Nostalgia Criticâs and I Hate Everythingâs channels who were given strikes for using footage of movies they were reviewing.
3. Now, this wouldnât be an issue if YouTube offered better support that what it currently does.
4. On the reasons for the introductions of Content ID onto YouTube was the 2007 YouTube vs. Viacom lawsuit.
5. However, YouTube made it clear that this would only apply to big name channels, think PewDiePie, and only those situated in the U.S, leaving smaller channels to fend for themselves.
6. But you have to remember, these are channels with a huge following who are willing to help. Smaller channels or those who just starting up will have virtually no defense.
7. Just recently, the Nostalgia Critic uploaded a video regarding the fair use issue on YouTube, in it he created, #WTFU.
Photo sharing websites:
I was already familiar with a few of the the choices for the websites and based on the these, I will go with Flickr. I chose this site as from the look of it and what I’ve managed to see from it is a sense of professionalism. It looks like the right choice for uploading these types of pictures to go along with the think piece.
I have used Tumblr in the past and the concern I have with that site is the community, sure, you can add professional or academic content on the site but, based on my own experience, feels like a site that isn’t intended for those uses. Based on a reading from a class I took last semester, I know it can be, as it was the site that created the one percent stories during occupy wall street but I would rather go with something else.
Instagram is another I have experience with and again, from what I’ve seen it doesnt seem like a platform dedicated to the material we would be uploading, more like its intentions are to be of a social nature.
There are certain sections that I believe I could create pictures from, including:
1. “However what attracted audiences was not itâs gameplay, but its blood and gore. Mortal Kombat featured secret finishing moves called fatalities that gave players the ability to decapitate and burn opponents alive among others.”
2. “Because most arcades contain no age restrictions, parents, politicians, and the media reacted negatively to this as they believed children would emulate Mortal Kombatâs violence after playing.”
3. “Despite this, GTASA, or rather all GTA video games, were more notorious for having the ability to murder innocent civilians and police officers while being depicted as a criminal.”
4. “However the study states that this was mainly found in children who played shoot-em-ups, namely Doom.”
5. “Originally programmed to be locked away, âhot coffeeâ was a scene that featured two characters having intercourse. Despite being made inaccessible, it was discovered and programmed back into all versions of the game by modders.”
I decided to use Flickr to store my pictures instead of Instagram and Tumblr. To me. Flickr seems to be more professional compared to the others as it focuses less on the social media aspects. Also, the website is easy for me to navigate through as I have used sites that have similar architecture. I believe pictures can be organized more easier as well.
Instagram on the other hand, though it may be popular, is usually associated with having pictures about food and selfies. Because of this, it is probably seen in a bad light by several individuals. Instagram is more difficult to navigate through as well compared to Flickr which is straight to the point. As for Tumblr and Instagram together, I have no need to make blogs or use social media.

1. A common claim is that appropriation pushes the unspoken feeling that as African Americans, the things that are a part of our culture are more acceptable when used by others.
2.Why is it that what is natural to a group of people is penalized but acceptable when replicated?
3.âWhich brings us back to Jennerâs ponytail. Folks arenât upset about the style itself, but rather Jennerâs use of Yaki, a type of synthetic hair used almost exclusively by black girls all over the globe for braiding, and her continual reliance on black style and culture without the burden (and responsibility) of actually being black. â
4. âWhat would America be like if we loved black people as much as we love black culture?â
5.From Rachel Dolezalâs portrayal of âBlacknessâ, the creation of bantu knots being credited to Marc Jacobs as âtwisted mini bunsâ, cornrows going from unprofessional to edgy, and the twist out being coined as a ârope trickâ, many are taking to social media to express their absolute disgust at the colonization or appropriation of Black culture.
I do not have much knowledge of Flickr, however I have used Tumblr and Instagram on a professional and social level. Both platforms allow users to post original content for whatever purposes they choose. Tumblr is more of a social platform and does not seem best suited for the purpose of social activism. I also have a smaller following on this site. With Instagram, I have spent several years working up a following and from past experiences, understand that socially conscious work is well received. I will be working with Instagram.
