NF1*

This research project for Oral Pathology  involved investigating a specific assigned pathology; I was responsible for Neurofibromatosis I.  Neurofibromatosis I (NF1), also called von Recklinghausen’s disease, is a genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple noncancerous (benign) tumors of nerves and skin (neurofibromas) and areas of abnormal skin color (pigmentation).  I gained a better understanding of the cause of the disease, how it presents clinically, how it is treated and what are the long term effects.

VITMAINS

This Pharmacology assignment was to visit a local drug store and examine a particular vitamin/supplement; where it was located, what shelf it was on, the design of the packaging and what “selling words” were on the container. We then had to research the ingredient(s) – I choose prenatal vitamins. This assignment taught me so much about Folic Acid and Omega-3’s and truly vitamin supplements in general. This assignment in particular would be extremely beneficial to me as I became pregnant a few months later and started to take prenatal vitamins daily!

ANTIVIRAL MEDICATION FOR HERPES SIMPLEX: PRESENTATION     SUMMER 2017

Link to my team’s presentation: Antiviral medications for Herpes Simplex

H.SIMPLEX

Our team collaborated and presented our fellow students with the attached PowerPoint on antiviral medications for Herpes Simplex. Herpes Simplex is very common and something Dental Hygienist are likely to see, at some point, during practice.  By researching the available medications available to treat Herpes Simplex, our group gained a better understanding of the virus itself and how to properly reschedule patients based on the amount of time needed for medication(s) to eliminate an outbreak.

wellness fair: PLS     spring 2017

PLS Group

For our DEN 1200 Seminar course, we were instructed to pick a topic related to the dental profession and create a brochure, presentation and display board to present at the New York City College of Technology Wellness Fair. Me and my team chose the medical condition:

Papillon-Lefèvre (pah-pe-lon- luh-fev-ruh ) Syndrome(PLS)

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare hereditary disease. The disease is characterized by palmoplantar hyperkeratois combined with severe periodontal destruction affecting both deciduous and permanent dentition.

PLS3

While performing the research for this project, I learned a lot about performing research studies and also how vital our role is as Dental Hygienists. For PLS, collaboration between ourselves and the Dentist are absolutely vital as scaling and root planning, extractions, medicated Chlorohexidine rinses and multiple antibiotics are all required to successfully control this devastating disease.

lYMPHADENOPATHY: PRESENTATION     WINTER 2017

Link to my presentation: Lymphadenopathy

LYMPH

Lymphadenopathy is a disease of the lymph nodes in which they are abnormal in size, number, or consistency.  Preparing this PowerPoint presentation helped me understand what clinical signs to look out for during extra-oral and intra-oral examinations and how they can be treated.
