The style originated in the Ashanti region of Ghana and was reserved for loyalty. In modern times the style has become much more popular and is almost synonymous with whats recognized as African clothing. Each color is said to hold symbolic meaning such as yellow meaning royalty and green representing growth and spiritual renewal. The patterns are very geometric because of the limitations of the process used to hand-weave the cloth, However these patterns have become iconic in recent times.
