An atmosphere of death can be seen in both Death Note and The Cask of Amontillado. There are contributions to the atmosphere of death that once seen we automatically relate it to death. Things such as darkness, skulls and bones, and loneliness.
In Death Note the Shinigami all congregate/live in a barren world. It is shown to be dark , cloudy and has several types of stone like structures that resemble bones. In the Cask of Amontillado when Montresor lures Fortunato in to the catacombs we get a detailed description of what it looks like. It was described as dark, wet and foreboding. There was also numerous piles of bones in which was pointed out by Montresor. As they approached the end of the catacombs we are told how the pile of bones looked with this quote. “At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth side the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size.”
