Gender Studies BMCC

This course is an introductory, interdisciplinary exploration of the fundamental concepts and perspectives of Gender & Women’s Studies. Through an intersectional lens, we will examine how gender intersects with various categories such as race, ethnicity, nationality, class, sexuality, sexual identity, disability, and others. The course will focus on gender roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that are considered appropriate for men and women. Core topics will include privilege and oppression, intersectionality, and feminist praxis. We will begin by discussing the history and significance of Gender & Women’s Studies as a field of study. Then, we will delve into critical analysis of institutionalized privilege and oppression, and how they shape individual lives and intersect with identity categories.
