Proposal

In our group project, we tried to make a topic that relates to students’ lives. After brainstorming with group members, we had ideas such as a guide to use library in City Tech and created a research tool for that, and created a forum for student for how to use their ID more efficient. After some discussions, we decided to work on how to utilize our school ID which represents CUNY. Then we started a deeper conversation about what kind of information do want to include in the project before any real online research. This helped us find out our focus point and not misleading. First, we thought to have students ID worked as credit or debit card for convenience. Then we thought it might be better if we could stick on the education factor.

Many students like us only know a little bit information about our school ID. In this group project, we are going to demonstrate how to utilize school ID in many different ways. Indeed, there are tons of good sources to get benefits as students such as educational benefits and enjoying entertainments with reasonable price. From the perspective of educational purpose, we tried to find out what resources are available. After researching it, we were able to find valuable sources such as using libraries in the city, campus services, and discount for many museums. Furthermore, from the perspective of entertainment, we focused on discount as a student in shopping, playing, and dining out. Besides, we also find out good information from social services such as health insurance.

When we try to find out specific information about our topic, we usually used web for searching tools, because there are tons of good resources on the web, and also most organizations have own websites which are well organized overall. First, we used Google as the search engine. Then, if we find out good sources, we go to the website for getting specific information such as New York Public Library, New York City health department, or Museum of Modern Art. Furthermore, there are many well organized websites for our topic, including each website for clothing merchants and restaurants. Indeed, when we use web for primary sources, we were able to find out specific information quickly. However, we paid our attention when we find out up to date information, because some websites are not up to date recently. For these reasons, we focused on most recent news or information throughout the web. For example, Xue Min was working on finding Museums in New York City that had free and discounted admission. The sources that he found most of them had no published date. So we must go through each Museum official website that was on the list to see the information was accurate. Another example of that was restaurant often had a discount on their food. And luckily some restaurants had discount for students. However, some discounts did not apply permanently and not every store had it. So we needed to update the information using the sources that we found.

As we mentioned above, our research topic is how to utilize our school ID. For this reason, we mostly focused on the benefits as a student when we use our valid school ID in this society. Although there are some limitations using school ID, the research show that there are many sources for getting benefits as students. For this reason, all research has informed very well to our proposal. For example, when we divided our topic three categories including educational benefits, entertainments, and social services, we narrowed down our topic into sub categories such as easy access to public services, discounting for purchasing, and getting fair opportunities for social services including health insurance. After some organizing and editing, we had five main sub categories for our project: campus services, library services, healthcare services museum discount, restaurant discount and shopping discounts. Throughout reliable sources such as many organizations, all research is useful and essential information for our proposal and the main topic. For these reasons, researching tools, and the result are very helpful to support our topic and proposal. It provides great amount of information for students who may interesting to know about their ID.
