Brooklyn China Town

Let me begin by saying I had no idea that Brooklyn had its own china town located on 8th Avenue. Kai Feng Fu is an Asian restaurant located on 4801 8th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11220. On our last group tour we visited this restaurant which was definitely a whole in the wall. My classmates, professor and I walked about 14 blocks in search of this restaurant, it seem like a mile. When we finally got there the place was very tiny and I wondered where were we all going to fit, but we were shown to a back entrance where there were more table and chairs. I ordered the chicken and mushroom dumplings, the scallion pan cakes, and the beef pan cake. The dumplings tasted like thick dough with only a little chicken filling, after eating two dumplings, I began opening the others and only eating the inside. I was excited about the eating dumplings before we got to the restaurant, but after tasting it I was not impressed.

I also had the beef pan cake, and was not impressed. I taught they would of fried the the pancake with the beef, instead I was eating a flat bake sliced open where they inserted the beef. The beef was tough and the pancake was to thick. There was some redemption with the scallion pancakes, they were soft and savory with the scallion fried within the pancake giving it that mild onionny flavor. Will try the scallion pancakes again.

Mable’s peanut butter pie

A few weeks ago my group members, Samantha, Kizzie, Radka and I went to Mables smokehouse as research for our upcoming food tour project. Athough we went there for the barbecue, the peanut butter pie stole the show. My tastebuds were delighted with the delicious creamy texture of the peanut butter pie, it just melts in your mouth, topped with chocolate sauce and wipped cream. I never had peanut butter pie before and I’m glad I tried it, one of the most heavenly desserts I’ve ever tasted.image

Bunuelo

This little Colombian ball called bunuelo was delicious. It was surprisingly soft on the inside while the outward is a deep fried shell. This pastry reminded me of something called fried bakes from my country of Trinidad. Just goes to show even though we have our own cultures and cuisines, there are similarities in food dishes. I wanted to buy more of these but then I remembered starch goes right to the hips..lol

Mast Brothers Chocolate

I tried the sheep’s milk flavored chocolate, never again. It tasted as though I was eating the animal itself. There are some things that should not be combined, and sheep’s milk flavored chocolate in my opinion is one of them.20151016_125354

Herring in cream sauce

This was a surprise to my palette. I have see herring in cream sauce before but I didn’t like how it looked so I never tried it, but I decided to be brave and tried it when we went on our culinary tour of Little Italy. I had a premonition of what it might taste like but looking at it, but to my unexpected surprise it wasn’t that bad. The herring was sweet and tangy  but had a  lingering onion taste on the palette. one try was enough. I also tried the gravlax with cream cheese bagel, I liked it very much, the smoky flavor of the locks paired with the creamy texture and taste of the cream cheese was nice. I’ll try it again.gravlox

First time Thai Food Experience

Back in August I went to a Thai restaurant, Lantern Thai Kitchen. I had the Grilled chicken  skewers with peanut sauce and cucumber relish for my appetizer, the chicken was nice and tender with a curry seasoning flavor, I loved the peanut sauce which complemented the dish nicely. It was really good and I would definitely try it again. I also tried a  Watermelon martini, it was not what i expected, i taught it would of tasted like watermelon, but it was a bit tangy and to sweet.I choose the sauteed beef Rama in peanut sauce with fresh spinach for my entree, yikes I did not enjoy this dish at all. The beef was chewy and the peanut sauce was thick and sweet, it was just to much, I learned a little goes a long way, small doses of peanut sauce at a time. Since I never had green tea ice cream before I ventured to try it, never again, it tasted like green grass or moss, tea and ice cream don’t mix.
