Students learn how to interpret their sketches to then make better selections of typeface and software to use once moving into a digital environment.

Type Challenge Tools
Create a new document in Illustrator
Go to FILE> NEW
Create 3 x 3 inches square / 2 artboards
- ARTBOARD 1 – Use the word: building (lowercase)
- We will create an outline and slightly move some points
- ARTBOARD 2 – Use the word: broken (upper or lower case)
- We will create an outline and use the pathfinder tool to divide parts of the letterform
- Choose a color palette from here-https://colorhunt.co/
- Make letters color from a screen shot or download. Pick 2 or 3 colors, don’t use more than 3.
- Save Illustrator file
- Export as a JPG

Assignment (activity 100 pts)
DRAWING LETTERS
Pick a short phrase, 5 words. Download the grids and pick one for your phrase. Download the drawing letters styles below. Follow thee set up of guides for each lettering style. Use your sketch book, ruler and eraser to draw a layout using the grid and letter styles. Pay attention to size, weight, style- make sure you are consistent with all your letters.
Draw 2 differnt layouts for the same short phrase. Draw on 8.5 x 11 page- Don’t make letter so large, erase to correct. Use sharp pencil
Take a picture or scan sketch.

PDf of grids are centered and use caps- except for script. Use max 3 differnt letter styles that work together.
Assignment (activity 6 pts)
Scavenger Hunt.
Look for three examples of typography in brands like Cereal Boxes, Cookies Candy Bars.
Go to your Dashboard and create a new post:
Select categories (under the GEAR>Document>categories>STUDENT POST and STUDENT POST TYPE SCAVENGER HUNT)
Add title: LAST name Scavenger Hunt:Typeface Food Brand
Go to the small plus sign and select Gallery
Then add your photos. MAKE sure photos are small (no more than 300px)
Always write a caption with your comments:
What do you notice about the type?
Pay attention at the arrangement of type
How does it differ from what we’ve done so far.

Graphic Assignments are always due the day before class at 11:30 pm, and must be placed in class drive (COMD1127 DROP BOX link) unless indicated otherwise. Assignments uploaded during class on the day that they are due are marked as late.
Participation Activities (Scavenger Hunts, Type Talks and Type Challenges) are due during class or the day before class at 11:30 pm if indicated by the instructor.
