Cultural Geography

Australia is an extremely diverse nation and is a melting pot of different cultures and communities. The cultural geography of a country is important in research because it helps us to better understand how people live their lives in different regions of the world or in a country (Sternquist, 2007). The main characteristics Australians have are their laid back attitudes, also known as their “no worries” attitude (Tourism Australia, 2022). This can be partly attributed to their love for nature and being outdoors. Australians love to enjoy the outdoors and wildlife, the mild weather allows them to be outdoors pretty much all year round. This connection to the outdoors seems to be the main factor in their relaxed outlook on life and slow paced lifestyle.

On the other hand there is another side to the Australian cultural geography, which are the Aboriginals who still live in many regions of the country. Their day-to-day lifestyle is somewhat different than that of the “modern day” Australian. One way they are similar in their lifestyles is their love for the outdoors and the environment, Aboriginals have strong relationships with the environment, and even have many myths about the landscape of Australia (Boudreau et al., 2022). Like many indigenous groups around the world the Aboriginals face many struggles such as loss of land, before colonization they lived throughout Australia today more than half of the aboriginal population live in towns on the outskirts in terrible conditions. They live their lives very differently than other Australians who are not indigenous, as they have to fight to be recognized and represented by the world and by their government (Survival, 2020).
