Air Barrier- Reduces air leakages within the building cavity.

Ballast- Heavy material installed over a roof membrane to stop the uplift from wind.

Bar- Small rolled steel, sometimes are rounded or rectangles used for cross section and for reinforcement.

Beam- Structural member that acts as a primarily support beam .

Construction Administration- Individual responsible for overseeing construction, certifying that the project is on track by coordinating with the architect.

Construction Documents- The set of documents put together by the architect with specifications meant to be given to the contractor to oversee construction.

Damper- Flapper to control or obstruct the flow of gases through the duct work and throughout the building.

Design Development- figuring out how it’s going to be built and the materials to use

Environs Maps A map showing the context of a site. Used to give a client a sense of where their site is located in relation to landmarks and other well known geographic locations.

FAR- Floor area ratio is divided by the total square feet of the lot the building is located on.

Fusible Links- A metal link made of two parts held together by a low-melting-point alloy. When exposed to fire-condition temperatures, the link separates, allowing a door, damper, or device to be closed.

Fire Rated Wall, floor, or roof construction using specific materials and designs that have been tested and rated for conformance to fire safety criteria, such as the flame spread rate.

GWB- A panel whose gypsum core is paperfaced on each side, and that is used to cover walls and ceilings while providing a smooth surface that is easy to finish. Used as a substitute for plaster.

Load Bearing – A load-bearing wall (or bearing wall) is a wall that bears a load resting upon it by conducting its weight to a foundation structure. The materials most often used to construct load-bearing walls in large buildings are concrete, block, or brick.

Plumbing Fixture- A receptacle in a plumbing system, other than a trap, in which water or wastes are collected or retained for use and ultimately discharged to drainage.

Sill- Is a horizontal bottom piece that goes under the window or a door. The material is sometimes stone but often as wood.

Sky Exposure Plane- Theoretical inclined plane that cannot be penetrated by a structure.

Stucco- Its a thin color coating of plaster that is applied to the exterior wall of the building .

Turrent- Its a small window that is placed at the corners of any buildings.

Zoning- Codes and laws that dictate which building practices and types are permitted to be utilized for a particular site.

Zoning Envelope- The maximum buildable area of a site in three dimensions.
