Course Description:

An introduction to college writing for incoming freshman, ENG 1101 serves multiple purposes. It is an introduction to the processes, rhetorical situations, structures and registers of college writing and reading, and it introduces students to discourse communities and practices of college. As a course that includes several types of writing assignments (informal, scaffolded, formal, discipline-specific ) across several different writing platforms (web-based, paper, notebook, mobile) and genres (personal essay, argumentative essay, research essay, blog post, letter, Tweet, proposal, bibliography, editorial, report) the course is a practicum for understanding and engaging with college writing assignments and critical reading practices, textual analysis, critical thinking, and composing and revision processes.

This course develops competencies in five categories: rhetorical knowledge; writing and reading processes; critical thinking, reading writing and research; composing in manual and digital environments; and knowledge of academic conventions.

Course Policies:

Cancellation of Classes:

I will email students at their City Tech accounts to notify if class is cancelled and if there is information on rescheduling or additional assignments to make up for the missed class.

Electronic Devices Policy:

Please keep all electronic devices on silent, off your desk, and away during class unless they are being used specifically for class related activities (note taking, etc.). Use of electronic devices during class for non-class related activities (texting, social media, listening to music etc.) will affect your participation grade (15% of the overall grade). Any recording of class activities must be announced and permission received in advance.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance is expected for all students. Attendance is necessary to understand the class and participate in classroom discussions. Therefore, attendance is tied to participation (20% of the overall grade). If you miss class you will be unable to speak during class and unable to complete the daily in-class short writing assignments which will lower your participation grade.

Lecture and Lab attendance is counted separately.

Use of Email:

I will use only City Tech email accounts for this course. Therefore, contact me at my City Tech email address. If I need to contact you as a class or individually, I will send email to your City Tech email address only. Please check the account regularly.

Announcements for the course will be posted to OpenLab but I will not be regularly checking OpenLab mail.
