MTEC 2210 – Game Design & Interactive Media

Course Description:
This course offers a cross-disciplinary foundation for the design of games and interactive multi-media technology for artists, designers and technologists. Students will learn human-centered design principles applied in a game engine environment, and learn the fundamentals to developing digital games. This course will also get you started and comfortable with industry standard software for game development.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • learn correct terminology for technical and design aspects of the field.
  • incorporate design processes into their projects.
  • better understand the game development workflow
  • benefit from hands-on experience in both code and editor environments.

Course Materials:

  •  Slack (best to have the Desktop & Mobile App)
  • OpenLab
  • Readings (will be supplied to you as downloadable PDFs or links)
  • GitHub account (make one if you don’t already have one)

Hardware Requirements:

  • Mac or PC (preferably with a discrete graphics card and 16GB ram or more)

Software Requirements:

  • Unity 2022.3.XX (LTS)
  • Visual Studio 2022 (or above)
  • Git Client (either SourceTree, GitKraken or GitHub Desktop not VS Code)

Expectations:

  • Spend at least 4 additional hours a week (outside of class) on class projects & readings
  • Upload weekly HW (reading responses & exercises as specified in class) at the start of next class, and mid-term & final project on due dates (details TBD).
  • Attend all classes and arrive on time.
  • Present in-progress and final work to your peers for critique
  • Participation in class discussions & group critiques

Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to attend every class and actively engage/participate.
For excused absences and lateness, contact me before the class begins via email.
Students are responsible for the material covered in their absence. Check Slack for assignments, and contact the instructor if you have additional questions.
Lateness and absences will impact your grade and everyone else in the class. As most of our projects are collaborative, we are dependent on everyone’s presence and full participation.
All in-class activities are graded for participation.

  • 10% Reading responses
  • 05% Quiz
  • 30% Mid-term project
  • 35% Final project
  • 20% Participation & Attendance
