COMD 4900 Internship

Assignment on Ethical Reasoning

1a) When sourcing images, I mainly use Unsplashed.com for my designs because they have a large variety of high-quality, royalty-free images. Most of my other colleagues are illustrators or video editors, so I’m the only one that uses images. Unfortunately, the organization I work for does not have the funds to have models to take pictures for our campaigns, so sourcing images through royalty-free sites is necessary.

Logos are given to us by the organization. We are also given the liberty to design some of the logos. For example, one of my colleges designed the logo for our sweepstakes project. The interns work very closely with the company founder.

1b)Β For our internship, we have not signed any confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement.

2a)Β I am currently only sourcing royalty-free images from Unsplashed.com and Flkr.com, for which I do credit. As a freshman in college, I used to be careless about my soucing. I mainly used google; I credited as much as I could but wasn’t very consistent. Then, later on, I subscribed to adobe stock photos. It helped a lot at the time but became too expensive. Lastly, a professor of mine suggested we use Unsplash, and I’ve never looked back.

I rarely use illustrations, but when I do, I use the royalty-free site Freeicons.com. This site rarely, if ever, has illustrator names for their work, so I haven’t credited any work from there yet.

2b) In my opinion, the Shepard Fairy “Hope Poster” case results were a good compromise between both parties. Fairy should have been more careful when sourcing his images; Google is a slippery slope. However, I believe that when editing a picture to the point that it no longer looks anything like its original, it should be deemed transformative. Instead, Fairy lied about which photo he used and tried to hide his tracks which ultimately did him in. I believe that sharing the rights to the poster was an excellent decision as the poster generated a lot of income for Fairy. The point where Fairy and AP decided to collaborate on a series of artworks was also a great idea. It is a great way to amend the animosity between both parties while also generating more revenue.

Looking for Internship

I have begun looking for internships. I have been using Internship.com, Chegg.com, Handshake, and the internship site on Openlaab. So far I’ve had some responses. Two of the places I had applied to wrote back but looking further into those companies I realized that the internships weren’t for me. I got an interview with a branding company next week as well as a non-profit company.

This week I got interviewed by two companies, a small start-up company, and a non-profit company. Both internships went exceptionally well. I ultimately went with Giving Forward as I think it is an excellent opportunity to work for a good cause, and the organization seems to be highly flexible with students.

I had a meeting with my supervisor. This time he told me more about the organization and my duties as an intern. It seems like I will be working on social media. I will be designing posts and videos for their Facebook.Β Β

I began my social media work by designing Facebook posts that promote the non-profits social media site.Β The social media site donates advertising revenue to non-profit organizations like The American Cancer Association, and USPCA.

Here are 3 of my preliminary designs:

This week my Supervisor got to see some preliminary designs. It seemed like he really liked them. I created a campaign called “One-Click,” which gives the viewer the ability to recognize that viewing our posts on social media can save lives. He gave me some good feedback on colors and imagery. My designs were mainly targeted towards viewers or site visitors. My Supervisor told me that I should also create a post that invites people to start creating content on their site. This week I’ve started working on some of the designs. I will finish them up next week and show them to my advisor.

Here are 2 of the designs that I have made so far. I’m trying to create three different designs so that my Supervisor can have options:

This week, we met with all the other interns and the design team. The company’s founder has decided to steer the design team into working on a sweepstakes platform. This platform allows participants to donate money to a non-profit organization of their choice while simultaneously gaining the chance to win a grand prize. The prizes haven’t been set yet, but it seems that there will be multiple prizes and multiple events.

I showed the two posts I completed last week and a new post I designed this week in this meeting. We also discussed our future work with SFAC. Our first move will be to convert the logos of all the organizations that we collaborate with, from JPG’s to SVG’s. There are over 300 logos to work on, so it will be a lot of work to finish, but we will be splitting it up with all the interns, so it shouldn’t be so bad.

Here is the last post I designed this week:

This week I spent all of my time converting logos into SVG format. The point of doing these conversions is so that the web designers can insert all of the logos into the new platform. I start my process by searching the company’s name on Google Images (this process is usually lengthy because not all of the companies have logos that are good quality available on google). Once I have downloaded the logo, I take it to Photoshop and convert it into a PNG file so that the backgrounds of the logos are transparent. I finalized the process by taking the PNG file and transferring it to a page website called Photopea. Photopea is a website that allows users to convert files into SVG’s. Lastly, I moved the file into a shared Google drive folder. It’s a lot of work but surprisingly therapeutic, although I am looking forward to designing again.

I finally finished the SVG files this week and began doing some preliminary banner designs. It was unclear what the prizes were for the sweepstakes, so I created some rough plans to show my colleges and figure out an artistic direction we should go with. I, unfortunately, could not finish the designs as I had a tragic accident in my family and had to take care of a lot of family affairs. I did, however, show my designs to my supervisor. The team decided to mainly focus on Instagram posts.

Here is the design I made for this week:

This week I was given a new challenge. My supervisor asked me to create an infographic for our sweepstake. I have never made an infographic, so this assignment was exciting. Luckily my supervisor provided a reference design of something he wanted. So I started my research process by creating a mood board of infographics that I thought looked similar to the reference picture. Then I made a list of things I wanted to display in the infographic. And then, I made a couple of versions of the design I wanted. Finally, I chose the design that I thought worked the best.

Attached is My final design. My supervisor was very pleased with it.

This week I was asked to begin creating social media posts. I wanted to create a brand identity for their social media, a design that could be very flexible. I started by thinking about circular shapes. The website for our sweepstakes and the logo use circles. Again, I compiled a mood board revolving around circular designs. I eventually came up with three final designs, which I will attach to this post.

I’ve completed the semester! Even though I have finished my studies, I’ve decided to stay a little longer with the non-profit organization. I believe I’ve learned a lot here and wish to volunteer a little longer. I’ve learned how to change project direction constantly and quickly come up with new ideas and designs.Β I look forward to continuing my work with the organization and develop my career.
