The Rise of the Economy in NYC

Rod Blagojevich once said, “A successful economic development strategy must focus on improving the skills of the area’s workforce, reducing the cost of doing business and making available the resources business needs to compete and thrive in today’s global economy.” This quote talks about how people should work hard to not reduce the minimum wage of the cost. The Economy in NYC is a big issue because New York is the financial capital of the world and the economy is bound to influence the city significantly. The economy of New York City is the largest regional in the United States because it deals with the Stock Exchange. The three main points that need to be acknowledge the economy in NYC are is minimum wage, the unemployment rate, and the low income workers. These three main points are important because they are topics that need to be acknowledged in order to better the economy of New York City.

Steve Hanke once said “The most important lesson to take away from allowing the minimum wage and unemployment benefit data to talk about this abstract notions of what is right, good and just should be examined from a concreate, operational point of view. A dose of reality is most edifying”. This quote talks about the important lesson about minimum wages. The first issue that relates to the rise of the Economy in NYC is the minimum wage in NYC. Minimum wage in NYC now is $8.75 per hour and by the beginning of 2016, the minimum wage will be about $9.00 per hour for workers who work in the hospitality and building service industry, miscellaneous industries and occupations, and farming. The governor Andrew Cuomo also said he would raise minimum pay for fast food workers in the state to $15 an hour. There was a survey conducted that discussed the impacts of raising minimum wage values and there was a range of results. If the minimum wage was raised, it was said that 48% of the people would think it would help the economy because it can give more money to the workers. 28% of the people would think raising the minimum wage would hurt the economy because it would raise the cost of hiring for businesses. 21% of the people would think raising minimum wage won’t help or hurt the economy. Governor Andrew Cuomo’s plan is to raise the New York’s minimum wage to $15 an hour and it would cost the state up to 588,800 jobs if it is approved by the legislature. (Blain1). Furthermore regarding about the rise of the economy there is the unemployment rate.

Tom Hodgkinson once said,“What is required as we travel towards full unemployment is not new legislation but a gradual change of mental attitude, a shift in values. As our taste for idling grows, we will refuse to work for old fashioned bosses who demand a five day, 40 hours, nine to five type week, or worse”. This quote explains how full time unemployment rate is difficult to find because not working for old fashioned bosses. The next point supporting the rise of the economy is decreasing the unemployment rate. Unemployment rate is a measure of the fact or conditions of unemployment and it is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all the individuals currently in the labor force. The unemployment rate in New York City and New York State fell to their lowest level in nearly seven years as the long, steady improvement of New York’s economy. New York’s unemployment rate has dropped to 6.1 percent, from 6.4% in May. It has been the lowest since September 2008, the month that the Lehman Brothers investment Bank failed. The businesses of investment banking and securities trading are now providing a significant boost. For example, Wall Street has added about 5,500 jobs in the past years, an increase of more than 3 percent. Lastly I will talk about the low income workers here in NYC.

Alice Rivlin once said “The increase in inequality in income is a longtime trend, but the pressure on middle- and low income is going up rapidly. Especially if they live in an area where there are high housing and gas prices, like California”. This quote explains how low income workers is going up rapidly. Also, the increase in inequality. The last point about the rise of the economy in NYC is low income workers. Low income workers are people who are viewed with small incomes and inferior to other people. Many low income workers say “NO” to Health Insurance because the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate which requires the employers with more than 50 full time workers to offer their employees insurance or to face the financial penalties. In order for this to happen, business owners and industry groups should reduce some workers hours to let others have a chance to work. People who come from low-income backgrounds are proven to be less likely to succeed in comparison to people who are raised in other income levels. In order to better the economy, there needs to be more equality in giving equal opportunities to everyone. Policies targeted at low wage workers may have broad benefits, including improving the lot of low-income families with children.

Overall these points Minimum wage, Low income workers, and the unemployment rate are all related theme to the rise of the economy in NYC because they explain the situation of money and how it has decreased. People in NYC should read more about the economy to see how New York City is doing with the Stock Exchange.

Mid-term Exam

College isn’t worth it because other people think after high school they want to go and look for a job. In this article “College Priceless Value” by Frank Bruni addresses the three subtopic about this article are percentage cut, the debate, and the rating system.

The first subtopic is about the percentage cut. Percentage cut is a big issue in Wisconsin because there is a major report stating that “he recently proposed a 13 percent cut in state support for the University of Wisconsin”. This quote in the article states that the governor in Wisconsin just propped to a 13 percent cut. The government also report the struggle to improve human conditions because it would express concerns for the states work forces. Furthermore, about college is the debate.

The debate about colleges is very long back because students in college don’t want to sit in class and hear a lecture. As Frank Bruni writes “He notes that Thomas Jefferson exalted learning for learning’s sake, while Ben Franklin registered disdain for people who spent too much time in lecture halls”. This quote in the article talks about how students should not spend too much time in the lecture hall maybe because they have other things to do for other classes. Lastly about College Priceless value is the rating system.

The rating system would take accountable and reliable on how colleges would place their graduates into high paying jobs because of their education and their skills and momentum. As Frank Bruni states “Neither he nor Walker is wrong to raise that issue, given the high cost of higher education and the fierce competition in the world”. This quote means how President Obama would take this rating system more serious and reliable for college students to use in the future.

Overall, I think after reading this article college isn’t still worth it because of all the disadvantages that they are providing to college students. Other people might think that college is worth it because reading this article.

Textual Analysis Essay – Second Draft

Marlon Wayans once said, “Success is not a destination, but the road that you’re on. Being successful means that you’re working hard and walking your walk every day. You can only live your dreams by working hard towards it. That’s living your dreams.” This quote means being successful is working hard to achieve your goals. The poem, “The Road Not Taken,” by Robert Frost, states that in life we come upon many decisions, and there are points where we have to let fate take the lead. “The Road Not Taken” uses two paths as a symbol of a life decision. In this poem we are introduced to the traveler and all his life decisions. This poem is and expression of life, because in life is about making choices, where it can be hard to find your way out of something, but there are many possible ways you can do it.

“Then took the other, as just as fair, and having perhaps the better claim” (line 6&7) are verses where we can clearly see that deciding between two choices is a decision into which he is putting a lot of thought. Throughout the poem, we learn that there are two paths to take, but the traveler, who we suppose is Robert Frost, is uncertain of which one to take.  We learn that this is really a life decision, and not just a choice between two paths. In the line, “I shall be telling this with a sigh,”(16), Robert Frost shows a sign of regret, meaning he made the wrong decision. Not all decisions have to be clearly thought out or over-thought. In our lives, sometimes we make some wrong decisions, too. Depending on time, we can’t always really lookup that why we made mistake. Furthermore, there are important decisions that go into making a big change.

The next subtopic is about a hard way to find your way out of something. In the poem, Frost should decide which way to continue traveling. In the poem “I took the one less traveled by” (15) this line in the poem talks about Frost of which path is the best one to take. One way he thinks that it has been traveled many times before and it is safer, easier route to continue down but Frost ended up selecting the path that was less traveled by, or the road that did not look convenient, to continue his journey. In the poem “had worn them really about the same” (line 10) the two roads by stating that both roads had not been traveled lately. Also, “Because it was grassy and wanted wear ;”( line 8) illustrates that one road is no longer being used. Lastly, I will explain about the possible ways of making choices.

Along with choices are the many possible ways of making choices. Having many possible ways of making choices. Possible ways of making choices is difficult for people because they don’t know which way to go or how to choose. In the poem, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (line1). People need to make a choice and walk down one of these roads, leaving the other one behind. Also, in the poem, “Oh, I kept the first for another day!,” (Line 13) the speaker is no longer sure about his choice.

Overall, Life is full of choices, some predetermined, some decided on the spot. The road is really a metaphor explaining decisions that we make. Sometimes there are monumental choices that will affect the rest of someone’s life, whether they know it or not. The poem, “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is about one of those special moments where one choice will change the course of one person’s life. Others believes that depending on the road a person chooses, their life will turn out for better off for worse. In this poem in which we learn that sometimes we have to let fate take the lead. Life is a combination of decisions and fate. According to the author, the two paths symbolize the life of the traveler and all his life decisions. Every decision can really affect your life. My ideal world is deciding an option to take and it connects to my poem about the road that is diverged.
