My research project was about “Characterizing a Calpain gene, TTHERM_01108610 (TT01108610), belonging to Tetrahymena thermophila”. Tetrahymena thermophila is a unicellular ciliated Protozoan. Calpains are calcium-dependent, non-lysosomal cysteine proteases that are prevalent among eukaryotes and bacteria. T. thermophila has about 27 calpains, however, very little is known about calpains in these cells. To begin identifying the roles of calpains in T. thermophila, a calpain from T. thermophila, TT01108610, was selected using bioinformatics tools. In analyzing the gene expression pattern under oxidative stress, the cells were subjected to different concentrations of cadmium or hydrogen peroxide, oxidative stress inducers, for 4 and 24 hours. After the extraction of RNA, reverse transcription was done to make cDNA from mRNA. Preliminary results show the expression of TT01108610 decreased after four hours of 10 – 100 μM of cadmium (data not shown) and 0.5 and 1.0 mM of hydrogen peroxide. However, these levels were much higher after 24 hours. These results suggest TT01108610 may be involved in oxidative stress toxicity. Further studies are necessary to better understand any roles TT01108610 may have in oxidative stress regulation.

In this project, we use data collected by NASA to show a perfect fit with Kepler’s third law. This is an important technique employed for power laws that are linear in appearance when portrayed in log-log plots. Kepler’s third law has important applications that touch upon planetary motion, the shape of our universe and as an aid in predicting climactic events. Historically it took Kepler about ten years to fit the power law and it serves as a template for many astronomical discoveries.

Solid state lithium-ion batteries are an emerging energy storage technology. Their widespread adoption will require discovery of solid electrolytes that have (1) high conductivity and (2) ease of manufacture. This work focuses on synthesizing a new solid electrolyte combining a glassy ceramic called LAGP, and a polymer called PEG. The combination is achieved by high-energy milling. We conducted this research using a three-step process to identify electrochemically stable electrolytes including materials testing, data analysis, and 3D printing droplets of dispersed electrolytes on to a thin film. In the future, the conductivity of the printed electrolyte film will be measured.

In this project, the VEX robot was integrated with Raspberry PI for improved functionalities. The original VEX robot was only able to perform simple sensing and low-level motion control. The new system instead is suitable for more complicated tasks. With the help of several electronic components such as a motor board and encoders, the VEX motors were controlled directly by the Raspberry PI with varying speeds. Our findings show that it is feasible to control the VEX robot using the Raspberry PI only. The next step is to add the PI camera to explore onboard image processing for vision-based control tasks such as visual serving, visual tracking, and vision-based localization.

Hello, my name is kevin hernandez, I conducted research to figure out why many companies such as twitter have been implementing Progressive web apps (pwa). My research included Educational articles and creating a PWA through the use of a video. The results of my research made me conclude that PWAs are gaining popularity due to its capabilities of functioning offline, consuming low amounts of storage and being installable. Although PWA has a lot of benefits it’s not powerful enough to replace native apps, therefore, I’m planning to research what could be done to make PWA as powerful as native apps?

Hello, my name is Le Van La, and my ESP research mentor is Prof. Vishwas Joshi. We carry out STEM research about how to convert CO₂ into useful and friendly to the ecosystem and environment with energy-efficiency processes. Due to human activity and industrialization, CO₂ has been produced exponentially and abundantly, which speeds up the global warming process. One of the ways to effectively reduce this polluting greenhouse gas is to find multiple ways to convert CO₂ into other helpful chemicals. The conversion process is not easy and requires high energy and time since CO₂ is a stable compound that is normally inert, which means it hardly has a chemical reaction with other chemicals to produce useful products in normal conditions. The project is conducted online by using, summarizing, analyzing, and organizing relevant literature, articles, and data that are available via open sources, and the world wide web. As a result, given its potential and benefits to the environment, research in this area needs to be supported and continued. Thank you for listening to my summary of the project. Have a good day!

We are using machine learning model for automatic Home Loan Approval System due to the lengthy process of bank. Machine Learning (ML) is a process of self-learning from the experiences and acts without human intervention or re-program and it makes the computing process more efficient, reliable and cost-effective by analyzing even more complex data automatically, quickly and more accurately. In this program our end result will be whether the home loan is approved or denied based on the given user data like last payment, credit score, etc. using our classification predictive model.

I’m very passionate about data analysis and help in business growth. And therefore, I decided to write my research about data roles and why they are paid differently. I feel that data role requirements are very unclear for most students and HR managers that post positions for companies. As a senior student that is looking nowadays for an internship in the data field, I wanted clearly to see the differences and what is right for me based on the skills that I learn during the degree. Thanks to this research I learned that I’m going to start with a data analyst role and develop my ML skills by applying for data science roles in the future.
