In-Class Unit 1 Revision Discussion and Revision exercise
The weather is getting cooler, and we are midway through the semester, continuing with Unit 2: Good Trouble, the Reflective Annotated Bibliography.
After narrowing down your topic in conversation with me, AKA Prof. Hellman, begin researching. Start with a search on The New York Times website, and also check out Opposing Viewpoints through the City Tech Library website. Aim to find 2 sources that you can use for your bibliography.
Begin scaffolding your Reflective Annotated Bibliography draft in a Google or MS Word doc. ****Please check out this student Unit2-RAB-Model-2; you can work from this Word document or at least use it as a template.
Update: we will work in Google Drive Unit 2 folder if you have not already pasted your work below, simply work on it in the Drive.
1. Write out your introduction paragraph, which should include what you are interested in researching, why this interests you, what you already know about it, and what you hope to find out/ some questions you have.
2. Begin your source entries. For each one of your 2 sources, include and label:
- the MLA CITATION. Input your source info on www.easybib.com to come up with the citation format
- 1-paragraph SUMMARY of main ideas (aim for 4-5 sentences)
- 2 key QUOTES you found that represent important ideas, with citation info (paragraph number)
- 1-paragraph REFLECTION (response) to the source, with your own opinion on the content (here you distinguish your own ideas from those of the author/artist) and why you chose to include it in your bibliography. You could also include a response to some of the quotes you chose. (5-6 sentences)
We will mix in the final ingredients of the RAB (Rhetorical Analysis and Conclusion) next week!
Racism is basically the belief in which the different races are facing challenges, such as being treated without respect and dignity. Many individuals around the world today have been possessed of different behavioral traits, but yet it still exists today in the real world especially with social media. Just like how police brutality is connected to racism, people are being judged by looks, treated as if we don’t bleed the same and seem as if they aren’t human. I wonder what makes us different? People tend to forget that we are all the same, nothing makes us different from one another.
To add on, living in this world today you have to be mentally and physically prepared for all the different types of people who will try to destroy you. They may not destroy physically but they will be able to tear you apart with the way they treat you, with the way they portray you to others, they are also capable of destroying with judgemental comments that may affect how you feel about yourself. For example, children who attended school in Utah faced severe racism. The schools had no control over the disgusting behavior that was happening to the students because instead of getting to the bottom of the solution, they rather ignored it. According to The New York Times article it states ‘’blacks and asian american students were often called racial slurs. While teachers and staffed members ignored their complaints, the justice department found.’’ (p1) Teachers and staff were not good lookouts for the kids, they also weren’t taking the right precautions, which could have avoided multiple issues. Racism is not a wrong place, wrong time type of issue it frequently happens. If i were the teachers i would have definitely put myself in each student or parent position and briefly understand their pain. It’s hard to be surrounded by people who don’t accept you for you.
‘’Black students were disciplined more harshly and frequently than white students the investigation found and black students were denied opportunities form student groups.’’ Parents willingly send kids off to school to gain all the knowledge that they will need in the future to be successful. But yet they are viewed differently and even being mistreated, that’s not fair. Everyone’s point of views are different but that doesn’t make anyone less of a person or any better than anyone. They won’t even allow black students noir asian to gain the benefit of the doubt in gaining better experience on opportunities they may need in the future or present. Other kids are more than welcome with anything basically which isn’t a problem but at the same time it’s a big issue. It’s a big issue because everyone should have the same rights , follow the same rules and even be treated with respect.
In order for racism and mistreatment to come to an end, we the people must come together as one and seek justice. Going into a petition, writing letters out, creating an organization , gathering your community are all great ideas for seeking peace and justice for all. All of these come with pros and cons, the good part about it is your defending yourself and even getting out of your comfort zone to stand up for yourself. The bad part may be how people will continue the disgusting behavior and everything will get worse. To make matters better you must go into this with an open mind, if you go in being afraid you’ll most likely get a negative result. It is important to be ready for anything or anyone coming your way. Also understand the behavior and set limits for yourself so that you don’t overstep your boundaries.
Hi Mawa,
This is important work but needs to follow the RAB format (see model RAB in Week 11) and assignment directions: 3 source citations, 2 print and 1 non-print, each with a summary, reflection, quotes, and rhetorical analysis.
Please leave the assignment in the Unit 2 Google Drive.
Let me know if you have questions.
