Homework for Wednesday, September 10 – Mathematical Histories

The first part of your first assignment is to set up your OpenLab site and add this class to it. Congratulations if you’ve made it this far already! The next part of the assignment is to create a post on the OpenLab.

Writing instructions: Write a short (2 or 3 paragraph) introduction to yourself  and your “mathematical history.”

  • Include biographical information about where you grew up, what your major is at CityTech, and why you’re taking this class. Add any other details about yourself that you think your classmates would find relevant or interesting.
  • Include information about your experience with math, either in classes or out in the world. What are your general feelings about math? Have they changed over time? How do you feel about taking this class? If you’re interested in setting up or joining a study group, this would be a good time to let your classmates know.
  • (Optional) Include a picture of yourself so that your instructor and classmates can get to know you!
  • If there is information that your instructor should know but that you’d like to keep private (for example, if you require any testing accommodations through Student Support Services), please send an email to kpoirier@citytech.cuny.edu. Be sure to include your name and course code MAT 1190 in the subject line.

Posting instructions:

  • Select “Post” under the plus-sign icon in the toolbar above.
  • Title your post “My mathematical history – [your name].”
  • Type or copy-paste what you’ve written into the textbox.
  • Select “Mathematical Histories” from the categories available on the right-hand side of the screen (otherwise, it will be too hard to keep track of everyone’s submissions).
  • Select “Publish.”

Feel free to read your classmates’ submissions and comment on them!
