My name is Jiayi(Helen) Chen I’m 20 years old. I am a student at The New York City College of Technology currently in my Sophomore year and will be a Junior next semester. My major is Communication Design and I’m planning to get my bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design.
I’ve been interested in the art field when I was young. I like to draw and experiment with colors using different art mediums like watercolor, crayons, color pencil, oil pastel, and markers. It was Second grade when I received what I considered an “official” complement or approval regarding my art skills. We were told to imitate a famous piece of art called ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh in our art class. Our art teacher told us to leave out some details just to make it easier but then he told me to include those details, to fully imitate the piece because he thinks I’m capable of doing so. He complemented my skills and my work was being displayed out in the hall. I will definitely remember this occurrence for life because it made me more confident and realized that I can really do a good job at something that I enjoy.
