The first essay ‘Mother Tongue’ by Amy Tan describes the different kinds of English people use when speaking. She describes the English her own mother uses and while to me it seems broken, to Tan it is completely understandable. Her mother does not speak “broken” English but instead speaks her own version of it. I can relate to this very well as my mother and father were not born in the United States but each have their own version of English that I have to decipher differently. They both pronounce letters differently and associate different meanings to the same words which sometimes frustrates me when I engage in a conversation with both of them when in the same room. However in this case Tan’s mother is actually very educated yet still does not speak proper English like the one we are all accustomed to.
