Exploring Lower Manhattan

Oculus

Lower Manhattan landmarks

We started our adventure at the Staten Island Ferry Station. The area is beautiful both because is by the water and have a lot of historic places. The street is not like in midtown, all nice in squares, here is different, more European style. This part of the city was firs settled by the Dutch. We walked by Ann Seton’s Shrine who was the first born saint in America which was very fascinating to know.

We walked to visit Francis Tavern, which had sign outside indicating that after the American Revolution in 1783, George Washington had a farewell to his officers on the second floor of this building. Because of its history, the building is a New York City Landmark as well as a National Historical Place. The National Museum of the American Indian is another great attraction in lower Manhattan, where we could see the sculptures outside. These statues show the different continents such as America, Asia, Europe and Africa.

When we reached Bowling Green Park and Fence, our professor pointed out that there was the statue of King George III, but was removed by the Patriots pm 1779 as states on the sign on the fence. Reaching the Wall Street area we saw the Charging bull statue where there were many tourists making a line for pictures, close to it, we also saw the new status of the Fearless girl

We walked by The New York Stock Exchange, which is New York’s financial district. Later we explored the Federal Hall National Memorial, as the museum it had a Greek influence.  This is the place where George Washington took oath as the First President of the United States. Later we visited the Trinity Church. We visited the cemetery where Alexander Hamilton’s funeral was held and where his grave is located.as well as Fulton’s grave.

We finished our adventure by exploring the World Trade Center, the Oculus and Brookfield. The place is beautiful in tits unique design and appearance. The area is very popular and crowded by locals and tourist.

The memorial was very sad and beautiful in the same time, the water and names almost represents for me unlimited tears, but also infinite memory and life. We finished the adventure at Brookfield, which has amazing views by the water, restaurant, bars and many people are enjoying the summer outside. It is a shopping center but I definitely will come back and enjoy amazing views and atmosphere.

MET MUSEUM

The Met is one of the most famous museums in the world and the center of art in NYC. Over 5,000 years of art, more than 2 million works and more than 30 annual exhibits. The MET is home of the annual Met Gala, “fashion’s biggest night out”, the Met welcomes over 7million visitors every year. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 for the purposes of opening a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. It opened on February 20, 1872, and was originally located at 681 Fifth Avenue.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, colloquially “the Met”, is the largest art museum in the United States. With 7.06 million visitors in 2016, it was the third most visited art museum in the world, and the fifth most visited museum of any kind

The collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from first-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.

We chose the MET museum because is one of the most amazing museums of the world. It has a large collection of art from all over the world both ancient and modern art. You can watch and learn so much there and there are always new exhibitions. I been there 4-5 times and all the times it’s amazing as the first time. I knew about the museum because is one of the most famous in New York, I think the most famous. The word of mouth was the first source but the MET has a strong marketing and advertising program that bring millions of tourist every year. The admission price is $25 dollars per adult, 17 per senior and 12 students. New York residents and students can pay what they wish by presenting a valid ID. The closest transportation by the museum is train 4, 5, 6  and the bus BxM2. Every year the museum hosts 7 million visitors from all over the world, and all the ages. I felt very comfortable, I felt welcomed and when I needed help with direction the stuff was very friendly and efficient. I learned that elephants were used during the war for centuries in India and there was a special attachment, as a weapon to their horns, and there are only 4 left in the world. I learned the museum has a good store inside where you can find many interesting items. During “Heavenly Bodies” exhibition I learn that famous designers use and reproduce wedding dresses after medieval fashion of the church. I learned to walk faster and be oriented better in the museum.

The website of the museum is user friendly because it shows all the information you need, like hours, prices, events, upcoming exhibitions, etc. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend everyone to visit it.

Gugghenheim museum

Giacometti art design

According to the museum’s website it is an internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum in New York is at once a vital cultural center, an educational institution, and the heart of an international network of museums. Visitors can experience modern and contemporary art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film screenings, classes for teens and adults, and daily tours of the galleries led by museum educators. A NYC architectural masterpiece, the Guggenheim museum is home to one of the finest modern art collections in the world.

The collection focuses on Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, the artist Hilla von Rebay. It adopted its current name after the death of its founder, Solomon R. Guggenheim, in 1952.

I chose this museum because I knew it is one of the most famous in NYC. I love contemporary art and modern art and was really excited to how it looks outside and inside. I knew about the museum from word of mouth, I remember a costumer of mine was telling me how amazing her visit was at the museum and she had such a great time, since then I always wanted to go there. The admission is not free, the cost of the ticket is $25 for adults, $18 for students and seniors with a valid ID and free for children under12. The closest transportation by the museum is train 4, 5, 6 and the bus BxM2. More than one million of people visit Guggenheim every year. The visitors are mostly adults with a little presents of children. My comfort level was good, I felt welcomed and the stuff was nice and friendly and I passed the line very fast.

When I visited the museum there was a special exhibition attributed only to a preeminent artist of the twentieth century, Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) which investigated the human figure for more than forty years. This comprehensive exhibition, collaboration with the Foundation Giacometti in Paris, examines anew the artist’s practice and his unique aesthetic vocabulary. Featuring important works in bronze and in oil, as well as plaster sculptures and drawings never before seen in this country, the exhibition aims to provide a deeper understanding of this artist, whose intensive focus on the human condition continues to provoke and inspire new generations. I never heard about this artist and I was very impressed by his art. I learned that he mostly seen his project when in sleep to bring it to reality the next day. The website of the museum is user friendly and shows the hours, the process, the directions, history and explains the exhibitions, overall is a great website .I would recommend anyone to visit the Guggenheim museum in NYC, it’s a great experience and a lot of fun.
