The documentation process began by choosing our topic proposal; we decided that our topic would need to informative, interactive and offer the user an opportunity to gain knowledge about preparation techniques in different aspects of daily life. Our research began by choosing the most important areas that we felt as student applied to our peers. Our process relied on taking a survey from friends and family about situations that would relate to them in everyday life. Our decision became situations that we can to understand would effect each student equally, and we chose ’emergency’ and situations that can occur in our daily lives as students on campus and as residents of New York City.

The internet has provided a wealth of knowledge on these different categories of events. Our City Tech website also provides information for different emergency situations scenarios. The City of New York’s (NYC.GOV) website also gives tips and tricks to survive in different emergency situations. We began by identifying the particular issues or topics we could get the most information on and began to develop the structure of the ideas to post to the Open-lab website. We identified the areas of activity that we spent the most time in our lives, (a) Commuting to and from school by way of public transportation, (b) in our public, school on campus, (c) in our homes.

We decided that we would delegate the duties of building the site into two divisions, administrative and interactive. The team of three members used their individual talents to enhance the workflow by allowing each member to use their base knowledge to provide the necessary technical and verbiage updates. The restriction on time granted us the ability to view our project in it’s completed form and break down the website into sections that would assigned to each member as follows:

ANDREW- Tech Design/Presentation Organization/Proposal Drafting

ISAMAR- Direct Survey/Verbiage Updates/Fact Check Site Information

CEPEDA- Process Organization/Verbiage Search/Website Proofing

The intention is to aware our fellow students and staff about the emergency procedures that are available on the school website and other websites for the community. The information provided can help save a life and your life. Knowing what to do in case of an emergency is very crucial to anyone who reads on emergency procedures. Even in times of panic we never know what to do and just run off the wrong direction. The process helps give ideas and helps the individual plan ahead before the time of an emergency approaches.

So what do you do?
The game has questions and multiple choice answers. You can be right or wrong, the intention is to help you know what to do in case of an emergency. The game is designed to help students and staff members learn the procedures necessary to avoid or escape a critical situation.

Here are some steps:

1. Take deep breaths. Your brain can’t function properly without oxygen. Take long, deep breaths, not short ones.

2. Figure out what you need to do, and do it. Make sure you do it right while still being timely. Run in your head each choice you make, and determine the affects of it.

3. Call your local emergency number such as 10111, 112 or 911. After you’ve gone through your choice, call your local emergency number immediately.

4. Follow the instructions of the emergency dispatcher on the phone and don’t hang up.

5. Relax. Wait for the emergency specialists to come. There’s basically nothing you can do after you’ve made your choice and have called the emergency number.

Some of the questions that are on the game ask about what, who, where and how to complete an emergency procedure. For example:

1) In the event of an emergency, you pick up a telephone to make an on-campus call, what number do you call?

The answer is 5555. In order to get in touch with the Department of Public Safety Dispatcher. Otherwise call: 718.260.5555.

We don’t always know the answer to every question, but learning a few details on something that could possibly happen can save us from any harmful experience. Being alert of information provided by the Department of Public Safety is crucial. We can not only save ourselves, but help our neighbor. Being informed and aware is the key to avoid any possible danger.
