Excerpt of my pro-response in a debate of the validity of BSN – in ten legislative bill written Spring semester 2012
Standardization is consistency. Consistency translates into trust; trust all patients, colleagues and other health professional’s value. Yes, change and the implementing of it is not easy. However, isn’t knowledge and improvement the best thing overall for everyone not just the nurses and patients but also the business of health-care? Not saying that the ADN or certificate nurse is not competent, but the difference in their education amounts to difference in how they seek to help you. No more are we a nation of sick people in the hospital, we are a nation of the sickly being kept at home the elderly living longer; so the expectation of just caring at the bedside is false. Realizing the importance of our role in the broad spectrum of health field help us to imprint not only on our individual patients, but policies that affect nurses as well patients. According to the IOM, future of nursing report “Strong leadership on the part of nurses, physicians, and others will be required to devise and implement the changes necessary to increase quality, access, and value and deliver patient-centered care.” It continued with “Being a full partner transcends all levels of the nursing profession and requires leadership skills and competencies that must be applied within the profession and in collaboration with other health professionals.”
