Duggal

Having the opportunity to visit a company that is a part of my field of study was amazing. The field trip to Duggal was definitely a good experience and I learned a lot. From the different papers and how they affect the printed result. The different displays and how they are used. As well as real world examples of RGB and CMYK were valuable pieces of knowledge.

I knew that different papers have different affects on how something looks. But I didn’t know how great the affect was. The glossy papers that have a high sheen that is used in prints that require vibrant colors, such as fashion magazines. The uncoated paper that is great for business cards. You can’t forget translucent papers that show their potential when exposed to light.

Displays were also a major part of the field trip. Like the papers, there are different displays with different uses. For example, lightbox displays, portable displays, but the most impressive was the window displays. These window displays look one way from outside, where they are illuminated more from the front by daylight but inside the daylight become the backlight and give a different look to the display. If that wasn’t enough, when the sun begins to set and the color of the light changes so does the colors of the display.

In addition to the different papers and displays, the differences between the RGB and CMYK color spaces were stressed. RGB is known as the additive primary colors. These colors are added together to create the different colors. RGB is used for web displays or anything that is digital or on a screen. On the contrary, CMYK is known as the subtractive primary colors. It is called subtractive because the process works in layers which mask off the other colors and in turn subtracts brightness from the white paper. CMYK is used for print of all kinds.

All in all, the trip was great. It was educational and interesting. Learning about different displays and papers, as well as seeing a business in our field was a privilege.
