Community Services / Outreach Activities

  • 12/04/2022 – Volunteered for CityTech Open House, representing the Dental Hygiene department. Volunteer senior students and freshmen gave parents and students a tour of the department.

An event was organized to provide an opportunity to visit the College. We assisted our department in providing insight, for making the transition to college life smoother.

College students tend to ignore their oral hygiene due to several stress. This initiative was to motivate and encourage students to take care of their oral hygiene with appropriate methods and products.  It was a highly interactive experience as students were involved in the session and asked questions.

  • 05/02/2023 Head Start Outreach Activity at Neptune Center – Educated children aged 3-5 years on dental hygiene.

It was an amusing activity, teaching toothbrushing in a fun way to these little faces. These children had so many questions and were very expressive. The most important thing was to make this part of their day as an enjoyable experience and not sound like a chore. Moreover, capturing their attention for 30 minutes was the most important learning part for me.

  • 05/09/2023 Head Start Outreach Activity at Glenwood Center – Pre-school children educated, screen and given fluoride treatment.

On this visit, children were educated about toothbrushing. Later, all students were screened for decays & early childhood caries (ECC), followed by referrals. Each student was also given fluoride treatment. Most of these students had not been to dentists recently. Many of them had visible decays and ECC. They were educated and given referrals for parents to follow. As a professional, it was a learning experience to work with children at community level.
