Alphonse Mucha was a famous artist who did commercial posters, which had a wide audience, and he also worked in multiple media, including furniture, jewelry, and theatrical sets. He mostly worked in Vienna and Paris, but was also in Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute, from 1904 to 1910. There, he introduced his interpretation of the “new art” to a United States audience. The densely patterned posters epitomize the Art Nouveau interest in natural forms, decoration, and a rejection of the anonymity of mechanical production.I love Art Nouveau because it’s very innovative and it changed the way we as artists and consumers view art, especially during a time when there was another movement in progress called Arts and Crafts. What’s so amazing about Art Nouveau and also the Arts and Crafts movement is they both looked back to the old way. Both were inspired by nature and are seen in stunning lines and curves. One thing that makes Art Nouveau stand out is none other than the beautiful women and how they’re portrayed. Art Nouveau portrayed beautiful women but it’s deeper than just that because women were free because now they had the freedom and were allowed to go out as they please by themselves without accompany and they were more open to express their feelings and topic of sex.
Before Art Nouveau,art on posters or books or any other form of design to explain something or understand something we’re mostly always just text. Advertisement played a big role in the way people perceived women and just as today. Today they still use the female body as a way to sell a lifestyle especially product. Example in today’s era they use women as an object. For instance, your body should look away you should feel ashamed of yourself,now they use this from of brainwash to sell their products.
They will say such as if you don’t like how your body looks, buy this product and you will be perfect. In my opinion that’s a negative way to portray female, because women went to so much no to long ago they couldn’t vote and didn’t have the right to speak up and stand up for what is right. But Art Nouveau portrayed women in powerful ways that women are fearless and beautiful in their natural habitat carefree and that’s what art is all about it a way to express reality and fantasies. I don’t see women in these designs as simply a sexual object as long as they don’t tell them to be something they are not and tell them you can be whatever you want to be it’s okay. It’s a form of saying you can still be gorgeous and still be smoking and feel comfortable without being judged and a genius way of marketing. Mucha began making his art in Style that represents a physical woman in elegant outfit,also painted in flashy colors. Women have always been a key to art but not the way Art Nouveau portrayed women.That style led him to make sculpture and paintings posters in a unique and amazing beauty showing the shoulders,legs,and ankles.The whole goal of Art Nouveau was to change tradition difference between regular art like sculpture and etc. Art Nouveau is mostly used for textiles,graphic arts,especially glass art in today’s era. Art Nouveau brings out elegance to composition and modernity to design.
