Media Analysis- Contradiction, conflict, or enigma

“Black face”
Gucci’s Turtle-Neck Sweater
“Fuck Gucci”
T.I’s thought on the designers’ latest collection

With February being Black History Month, why did this fashion line feel like it was appropriate to mock such a racist act and time in history towards African American (Black) people with this sweater?

What did this designer intend to be interpreted from this piece of clothing, especially being displayed on a white model, and the origin of the design?

Rapper-Actor-Entrepreneur-Producer-Father and Community Activist, T.I made a lengthy post on Instagram basically stating #FuckGucci. He also states how he is “a 7 figure/yr customer and long time supporter of the Gucci brand…” and “APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED!!!!” He, himself admits to wearing and supporting the brand, knowing the affect he has on the public and his followers.

With Gucci being a popular luxury brand enjoyed by all people. Do you think that a boycott from a particular group of people will have effect on the nature of sales or the brand as a whole?

  1. I believe that if a particular group of people was two boycott Gucci it really wouldn’t make a difference because Gucci demographic of people that they want to cater to are the white and Rich therefore people of color was never part of the demographics that they tried to reach. That goes for a lot of the high-end label such as Fendi, Prada, and Tommy Hilfiger who was very upset at the fact that African American was wearing his clothes he stated his clothes were not designed for them but they meaning people of color was the reason why his brand was so popular in the 90s and early 2000.

  2. Hey Syeeda,

I really like your example, as it was not something that people left alone. It is fortunate that there is someone with a huge following that could speak out against something as blatant as this. Your question reminds me of an incident with a few similarities. In 1934, the actor Clark Gable appeared shirtless in the movie “It Happened One Night.” While it seems that Gable was following a trend rather than making one (as men usually wore undershirts), some people reported a decrease in t-shirt sales following the movie. Similarly, if people who have influence help move trends along, maybe there would be change that we want to see, namely clothing companies making clothes that don’t offend people.
