Although Deidre agreed to kiss Chris’s leg, she waited until his scar was fully exposed then backed out of the settled agreement,which was to kiss Chris’s scar once he exposed the rest of his amputated leg for her to see. She didn’t want to kiss it until the dude who didn’t speak all night-Morton Sands- said something. I think it’s shows Deidre’ s lack of self confidence when she quickly changed her mind once Morton Sands made a subtle comment. It wasn’t the fact of no one being 100% sure of Chris’ leg, no one knew he was an amputee at all, until he said it. Leaving everyone suspicious wanting to see it like little kids wanting to see a cool toy for the first time. But Deirdre got caught up because she was the one who asked to see it while everyone else just silently thought it. Morton Sands was just trying to “bully” Deirdre into kissing Chris’ stump for the satisfaction of everyone else’s imagination. After Chris asked in a sort of defensive flirtatious but playful way, everyone laughed. Deirdre probably started crying because she felt bad, realizing how distasteful she might’ve sounded by asking to see his war wound. Telling the beginning story of how Chris and Deidre met and ended up married six months later.
