Hello there!

My name is Steven Pena, I’m an Undergraduate at New York City College Of Technology,  and currently pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Professional & Technical Writing specializing in computer science.

Growing up I loved technology and experimenting with programming. I would always ask my parents for the latest gadgets at an age where kids wanted action figures. I once even made posters and taped them all around my neighborhood offering to walk dogs. I made a few clients and saved up my earnings to buy my very first MacBook. The excitement I felt from my first tech purchase is unexplainable, till this day I get goosebumps from the thought.

Every time I would get a new gadget,  I would be too excited to even look at the instruction manual.  I would just go straight into investigating the product and figuring out for myself how it worked. This passion to investigate lead me to become a Technical Writer and you may wonder “Why would he write instruction manuals, he doesn’t read?” , well because I like to investigate, explore options, and figure out what everything does on my own. This helps me put myself in the consumer’s shoes and helps me adapt Instruction manuals to be even more productive and helpful.

During High School, I joined Esthetix Dental Spa as a personal assistant to a doctor. One year later, I was promoted to Public Relations of the whole facility.

The promotion was because I pioneered a new “patient share” strategy that helped the new patient department break through a 1.5-year new patient plateau. This strategy was so successful that five months later, I was given my own office to manage the business strategy. This is one of my favorite past achievements because as a high school senior I barely had any work experience and didn’t have any public relations experience. I did exactly what I do when I get a new tech gadget, I investigate, explore options and figure out how to benefit the organization as a whole.

When I’m not brainstorming ideas or furiously typing away, you’ll find me reading, geeking out about cool tech or researching my latest obsession (UI/UX, High & Low Programming languages, consumer psychology, venture capital, to name a few).

Originally I was planning to major in Computer Information Systems, but developing codes and programs was entertaining but it left little room for investigation and creativity. Java programs are like math problems, they are pretty straightforward and require plain logic. Professional & Technical writing allows me to investigate the technology I’m passionate about and convey it into writing. I couldn’t imagine a career that suits me better.

Thank you for getting to know me!
