Response Paper #2: Approaching Poetry

Choose one section from Walt Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” and analyze.

1). In a brief, 2-3 sentence introduction, create context for the poem: cite the author, poem title, and when it was written. Write a 1-2 sentence summary of what you think the poem is about.

2). In a new paragraph, explain which section you chose, and what you think the speaker is conveying there. You may use a 1-2 line quotation to underscore your analysis–chose the lines in the section you think best illustrate your analysis.

3). In a concluding 2-3 sentence paragraph, explain how the passage does or does not ring true in your perception of today’s NYC.
