Information for Monday, October 31

Hi Class,

[update: did somebody leave a book in class?]

I’ve been really impressed by your  photos! But remember, I’m not grading them–only your essay. You may want to review the assignment details.

Essay 2 is due before class at 9am. Please upload both photos and your essay.

-Make the images small so that they do not take up too much space on the page.

-Make sure to name your essay with section details, for example: Sscanlan-Essay2-D326-f2016

-Here is my spring semester class as an example:

Homework for Wednesday, October 26

Essay 2 peer review on Wednesday:

Please bring at least two typed pages of Essay 2 to class for our peer review.

If you have not already done so, get your photos approved. Also, try to work on your quotations (3 minimum). The final draft will require a Works Cited.

Here are my findings on Essay 1:

-Avoid overusing “you”

-Thesis statement: While X, I think Y.

-Topic Sentences need to be stronger.

-Method—a strong method statement helps with organization and can help your thesis.

-Reflect on the end of your analytical paragraphs.

-Paragraphsstructure. We will cover this on Wednesday.

-Quotations-work on introducing each quote smoothly.

Julia’s Photo

This photo was taken at a car meet in Queens, off Atlantic Avenue. It is very lit up due to the car lights and the lights from the store around, however, this photo was taken around 11pm. This photograph uses the Rule of Thirds, the main focus is the yellow and black Hyundai tiburon along with the gray BMW. The other BMW half out of the picture catches attention as well.

Colors

I took this picture October 15th in Chinatown, Philadelphia while waiting for my sister to get off work. The dominate impression of this photo would be delightful because it shows multiple colors and it gives me a lovely and happy feeling.

Around The Globe

I captured this shot the evening of October 15th, at the Uni-sphere located in Flushing Meadow Park. The dominant impression of this photograph is a day coming to an end, this can be seen as the sun-light is only apparent from the west. The dominant impression can also be seen as the night lights have been turned on,  illuminating the Uni-sphere, and demonstrating the lack of natural light in the setting. The rule of thirds also applies as there is no centered focus.  The reality effect of this photo is low due to the shot being captured by a 180 degree fish eye lens, which portrays an angle that the naked eye would not be able to see.

Rainbow

img_1275

I took this picture on Saturday after getting off the train at 46st in Sunnyside. The rain had just stopped and this rainbow appeared while I waited under the train station for a friend.   I consider this picture documentary. The dominant impression to me is peaceful because of the sky and the rainbow.

Flushing bay

    Flushing BayFlushing Bay

I took this picture on Friday, October 14,2016. I took this on my way to the skating rink at Corona Park in College Point, Queens. This picture is a documentary photo. The dominant impression would be calm.

img_0017This is a photo of the West Farms train station in the Bronx. I took this picture on my way to work. I choose to take the picture in a upwards perspective because, when I was waiting to the bus, I looked up and I loved the way you can see the tracks from underneath. I also love the way the patterns on the front of the stair door way looks. The picture has a rustic look. This picture also includes the sky which is blocked by leaves and gives this picture an even more interesting effect.

Stratocumulus

image

I took this photo of Stratocumulus clouds in the sky through my window, after I woke up on Sunday morning. I edited the picture using the Nashville filter from Instagram, I love the edit on this picture, because I felt the original picture was dull. Others may see and think those are just some random clouds, but clouds always reminded  me of when I was younger, learning earth science for the first time and loving it, as science is my favorite subject still today. The mood of this photo is calm, I feel this is an art photo and not a documentary photo, because of the form of the clouds and the colors.
