Hi Class,

I posted two short stories in the “Readings” menu tab. One is by Kiran Desai, and the other is by Ha Jin.

For homework due Feb 19th:

• Read Chapters 1 and 2 in Steger’s Globalization (1-37).

• Journal 2: write up the following three parts on one single document, edit and proofread for clarity and mistakes, print it out, and bring it to class on Feb. 19th.

1. Read “The Captive” by Jorge Luis Borges and answer this question: how is  this story about globalization? (200 words)

2. Read “A Good Fall” by Ha Jin and summarize it using our 4-part summary blueprint. (200-300 words)

3. Read “The Inheritance of Loss” by Kiran Desai and analyze it using the 5-part Critical Reading Tool. (200-300 words)

• Also: Find a story about globalization on your own and bring in a copy of it. You can find your story anywhere (book, newspaper, radio, online, gossip, film, etc.). Make sure to write down the exact source. Be ready to discuss your story with the class for about one minute (about 200 words).

Cheers,

Prof. Scanlan

Welcome to English 2000: Globalization and Literature (Perspectives in Literature)

Hello Students of Globalization and Literature!

This site will grow and develop during the semester, just like you will continue to grow and develop as critical readers and writers.

If you have any questions, please let me know via email:

sscanlan@citytech.cuny.edu

The course policy and weekly schedule are located on the menu bar. Take some time to look around our course site; we will refer to it often.

Today, we will look over a brief example of globalization and global homesickness from Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel titled Persepolis. Then, if there is time, we will view a brief interview with the author:

Interview with Marjane Satrapi

Below are some interesting and informative posts from last semester. I think that they are still relevant.

Best wishes,

Prof. Scanlan

Facebook and Privacy:

Hi Class,

Many of you might be on Facebook, and you also might know that privacy is not really granted in the online world. This article from Time Magazine makes it clear that you need to be extra careful about what kind of information you put on your social media pages because colleges or employers—almost anybody—can gain access to it.
