This photo was taken on October 13, 2015 on Jay Street Brooklyn across the street from CityTech. This photo reminded me of the photo we had seen in class it’s similar to it because of the men working in high floors and constructing in the building. In this photo you can see 3 men on the 8th floor they are working on something. You can also see some workers on the side walk. I believe there’s even a crane on the left side that next to the building that’s being constructed. You can also see cars passing through.  There’s two traffic lights that direct the cars in different directions. In this photo it also shows a women crossing the street, and a man on a bicycle on the bike lane.image

Taekwondo Tournament 2nd place Jonathon Ramirez (Journal 5)

unnamed (1)

This picture was taken on October 11, 2015, Sunday at Queens College Gym, located at Kissena Blvd, Flushing. This was a big event for me and my friend Jonathon Ramirez. As we can see he won a 2nd place trophy for sparring and he did his best even though it isn’t 1st place. The uniform he’s wearing represents that he’s an ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) member, especially when he is an official black belt. In the background, there is a lot of spectators and members watching and waiting for their turn to compete with other members. There is mats on the floors which is where members set foot on it to spar, and also fighting gear which is a helmet, fighting gloves and protective footwear. So basically there is a lot of activity in the background, which makes it look like some type of party due to the fact that there is a lot of people there. I took this picture because taekwondo is my hobby and Jonathon did great in the sparring match.

Caesar’s Bay View

I took this picture at caesar’s bay bazaar, right next to it, is a beautiful view of Verrazano Bridge and the sea on October, 10th, 2015. I went to shopping with my friends at the bazaar there, and after we were done shopping i felt the fresh breeze that passed by me while i was sitting in my car. Then, me and my friend took a walk and while walking i took a picture that looked beautiful from my eyesight and thought i could use this for my journal. I always come to take a walk here when I’m not feeling good or my mood is off. I feel relieved and take my stress out. I took this picture without an angle and without a center. According to my experience of taking pictures, although I’m not an expert, i thought this picture was good enough to use.

Thanks,

A DAY AT THE LAUNDRY | BY: OSCAR CABRERA | 10/10/15 |

2015-10-12 09.16.17

I took this picture while I was in the laundry with my parents. I chose this kind of simple picture, because how we can see with have a center in the picture and a lot of activity in the back ground. My dad in the center of the photograph, and we can see how he is taking care of the machines, and see if everything is going well. Also in the background we can see a tv, a snack machine and the door. Outside the door we can see cars, parked by the sidewalk. The only this that I really like about the photo, is the reflection of the sun in the front of the photograph. This piece of the sun reflection I didn’t see it when I was taking the photo.

Journal 3 – Pier

Pier 17

This picture was taken today, October 7th at South Street Seaport. I took this photo as I was trying to look for something worth capturing with my phone’s camera.  The masts look bare without its sails, but it still looks towering and intimidating with the long pillars adding to its character. I also like to note how the sky’s color adds a sort of nice transition as it gets closer to the horizon, where it turns from baby blue to a sort of green-blue. The Brooklyn Bridge in the background only adds as a sort of little bonus, as it enhances the distance between the landmark and the ship.

Regards,

Jimmy.

Joining Openlab, Posting to Openlab, and Dominant Impression

Here is an example of a picture that I took and my description:

Manhattan-Stonehenge, 2011, Sean Scanlan

I took this picture in the early spring of 2011. The shot is of the sun as it is framed by skyscrapers on either side of E. 21st St., looking West, of course. The sun is setting and seems perfectly centered by the “cliffs” or buildings. I was walking with my friend, Tom, and on our way to play ping-pong at a place called Spin, which is a few blocks north of Union Square. What is so interesting about the picture is that the lens created the effect of all the red circles, I never saw them until after clicking the shutter. I did not use any filters on this shot. The red is overwhelming, but I can still make out the street scene. At first, I did not like the white car on the right side, but after further reflection, I liked how it adds perspective and the illusion of speed. Lastly, the lens also created the effect of a bright slash that goes through the street, straight down. I like that “sword” as it bisects the frame.

A Photo Contest for CUNY Students

Hi all,

Here is a link to a monthly photo contest open to all CUNY students:

http://www.cuny.edu/news/features/photo-contest.html

Also, here is a refresher on the homework for Wednesday:

From Sontag, define a term that you didn’t know, a photographer you haven’t heard of, and a film mentioned. Then look up “art” and “photography.” Include your sources.

An Interesting Photo Essay by Teju Cole and Monday’s HW

Hi Class,

I hope that you learned something on Wednesday–and I hope that it was enjoyable, too. In light of our upcoming photo essay assignment, I thought it might be interesting to read and example from one of the most interesting photo essayists out there: Teju Cole. Read his work from the Sunday Magazine of the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/magazine/far-away-from-here.html?_r=0

Also, for Monday: Read Sontag, read Parla, and write a positive 100 word comment on a classmates’ post.

Best,

Prof. Scanlan
