Every Action Has A Consequence

Would you rather have a person lied to you or be completely honest with their life decisions or action? The story “Say Hello Wave Goodbye” By Tony Parson analyzed exactly the topic of the question. The story is based on immigrant officers in the airport and what it’s like in a day with them. The story shows many parts of their jobs such as the questioning and the importance of them paying close attention to the answers and the passports. The main character Jaswinder Smith ethic overview the person lies or honesty with her. The ethic that connects to Jazz ethic would be the Virtue ethics and Utilitarian ethics. Virtue Ethic focused on the three main stands of a person which are Human flourishing, performing one’s function and the ethic if caring. This virtue is more to the emotions that a human goes through on their live. Utilitarian ethics is making a decision with the morality good side will make the outcomes good. If people use their morals to take an action the universe will return the favor with good and not bad outcomes.
The main character Jaswinder is one of the immigration officer in one of the airports of London in the story. Jazz is known throughout the story to investigate every single passenger that she gets she has no favorites in the story and is very professional when it comes to her job. The first passenger Jazz took was a Korean lady who was wearing a wedding dress and stated that she was marrying Princes Harrys. As unreal it sounds the Korean lady actually had all the required paperwork to enter the country and answer all the questions correct. Jazz job was to choose between letting her enter the UK or denying her access to the UK but Jazz allowed her in the country. For Jazz the truth counts more than being lied to and in this situation she was being told the truth. The next immigration officer in the story “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.” By Tony Parson, Published in London in 2011 indicates that other women has tried before entering the country to marry Prince Charles “I remember when it was Prince Charles they all comes over to marry.” (44). This statement is interesting and truthful since the Korean lady with the bride dress isn’t probably lying about wanting to and marry Prince Harry since there has been past history of other women going to the UK to marry Prince Charles.
In the story other characters were denied the enters in the UK because their information didn’t match and they were lying to Jazz. One of the characters was the American girl; she was about 18 years old and had a sweet personality. When the girl when up to Jazz window she didn’t answer the question with honesty. One of the questions that Jazz asked the girl was what brought her to the UK? Right away the girl answer she wants to go and see the wax museum. That answer is common for people who wants to enter the UK to stay there also when Jazz asked if the American girl had a return ticket and she answer no. Jaswinder had to make a decision whether to let the American girl inside the UK or not. She decided not to let her into the UK which made the American girl very upset. The American Girl in the story “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.” By Tony Parson, Published in London in 2011 question Jazz on why letting the Korean lady in and not her so Jazz answer “Because I don’t care if someone lies to themselves, said Jazz But I don’t like it much when they lie to me.” The quote explains a lot Jaswinder ethics and how much she respect those who don’t lie to her. Even though is part of Jazz job top question and go through steps with every passenger she does take seriously the passenger answers and how truthful they are.
Actions required consequences if a person does good, then good will come back as well if they do bad. Jazz ethics can be connected to Utilitarian ethics since she believed in people being honest even though her job is strictly control she understand those who enter the country. In the third ethics in the Short Introduction to Five Type of Ethics by Professor. Scanlan, 2020 it explains that every decision has a consequence “One thing to note is that this theory is a form of consequentialism: the right action is understood entirely in terms of consequences produced.” If the person does something he or she will have to pay the consequence. An example of the story “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” By Tony Parson is the American man in the story who was accusing Barack Obama of inserting a microchip into is brain and ended having a fake passaport and lying about his identity. He ended up being deported again to U.S. The ethic comes into place because all the bad decisions have consequences. . The American Girl in the story “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.” By Tony Parson, Published in London in 2011 told Jazz she was a “bitch” which made her situation even harder for her. “Bitch… “I’ll start with her, Jazz said she swiped the card that let into the holding room.” This quote from Megan “The American girl” is important because instead of treating Jazz nicely and trying to figure out Jazz decision Megan insulted her and that made Jazz take decision as to check Megan bag and discover Megan was going to the UK to stay.
In Conclusion the story “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” Tony Parson specify a lot ethic that the characters have. One of the main character was Jaswinder Smith that throughout the story she tried to be professional but at the same time follow her ethics to make big decisions. Other characters as to Megan and the other American man are an example of every decision have a consequence. Even though Jaswinder allow the Korean lady to enter the UK even though she had a overboard excuse she didn’t lied and there was history on other people actually doing the same thing. On top of that the Korean lady had all her document in place and had proof she was going to go back to her homeland. Ethics such as Virtue and Utilitarian ethics helped the character of Jaswinder to be understood whenever she took a decision.

Coffeehouse #5 Vargas Angela

One of my favorite stories from the list is “Say Hello wave Goodbye” by Tony Parson. The story is based on a immigration officer who explains her everyday life as a duana officer. The main character in the story is Jaswinder Smith. She works for an UK airport and has to ask frequent questions to passengers traveling to the UK. If for some reason the questions don’t match she has to make a decision of returning the passenger to their homeland. There’s different characters. Another one is “the woman with the bride dress” this character story is kinda odd since she traveled all the way to the UK from Korea to marry Prince Harry. Of course it wasn’t true but because she believed it and all the questionnaires she answered were correct with no issues Jazz allowed her to enter the country. One of the main actions the character takes is to allow the korean lady enter the country because what if that person had bad intentions and not trying to marry the Prince. Then Jazz would’ve put everyone in danger. Another interest scene was when Jaswinder and Ken, a UKBA officer, were checking a fake passport. This scene was pretty interesting for me since it shows how careful they must be when looking at passports and the details that make the passport fake or real.
Another story that is my favorite is “Assimilation” By E.L. Doctorow this story is based on a woman marrying a man to stay in the United States but fell in love with each other. The story has many characters but one of the main characters is Ramon. Ramon is a dishwasher for a restaurant. The owner had asked Ramon to marry his niece for papers and he would be paid $1000 for it. One scene from the story that was kinda funny was when Ramon first met Jelena in the kitchen and he said this is not what they show me. The picture that Roman saw of Jelena was a blonde smiling girl and there she was smoking in the restaurant and looking completely different from the photo. Ramon ethics are seen throughout the story in one scene Jelena asks him to smack her since she was behaving badly and Ramon didn’t because it was wrong and unnecessary.

The spirit of perverse vs Mental Illness

Mental illness plays an important part when the spirit of perverse arrives in a situation or the action of a person. The narrators for the story “The black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe and “The yellow wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s are known to practice using a lot of perverse actions due to their mental illness. Their mental illness converts them into aggravated and careless character in many parts of the story.

The spirit of perverse and mental illness is shown in the story “The yellow wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins due to the narrators not listening to her husband John about not writing through her illness. The narrator shows a lot of mental illness throughout the story in one part the narrator explains how she feels more angrier than ever “ I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes. I’m sure I never used to be so sensitive. I think it is due to this nervous condition.” Also being inside a room she doesn’t enjoy brings the worst of her and not being able to write too. The spirit of perverse begins by her not agreeing that she’s sick and has a mental illness which her husband John practices a lot of unnecessary remedies for her. The need to do what’s right is important for her since she knows she’s sick but doesn’t trust her husband to cure her. Writing helps with her illness because she feels relieved when she writes but her husband John doesn’t allow her because it is not going to help her. In that matter she goes behind his back and writes about the yellow wallpaper in her room and begins to hallucinate about it.

The story “The black cat” narrator plays a character with many issues surrounding him and making him into this monster of a person. The narrator explains how he never had an issue with his family but throughout his life things change which lead him to become an alcoholic. The narrator’s anger and pulse intuition got him to harm his wife and cat pluto. The narrator suffered from trust issues and believed his cat was his worst enemy and wanted to harm him. Due to the alcohol issues his illness began to be servere and took a lot of action as to even tried to murder the cat just by a simple look. “I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself using intemperate language to my wife.” The narrator couldn’t control the need for his high temperament which made him lose his mind whenever he felt the need to harm those he loved.

The narrators of both “The black cat” and “the yellow wallpaper” suffer from mental health which creates a lot of violence and actions that harm themselves and their surroundings. Both of the narrators couldn’t control their emotions and had a high impulse to take actions upon themselve.  The narrator of “The yellow wallpaper” had a break point where she couldn’t control this anxiety and depression about the yellow wallpaper and she began to rip it off due to her anger and despair of being locked in the room. “I tried to lift and push it until I was lame, and then I got so angry I bit off a little piece at one corner—but it hurt my teeth.” She knew she couldn’t go outside the room since John didn’t allow her but her impulses and her need to be heard got her to her limits. This scene can be compare to the narrator of “The black cat” when he tried to get rid off pluto one night after coming home drunk because pluto was ignoring him “My original soul seemed, at once, to take its flight from my body; and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin- nurtured, thrilled every fibre of my frame.” The narrator suffers an anxiety and temperament attack which lead him to just see anger. The narrator felt as if Pluto wasn’t there to support him as much. Both of the narrator wanted to be heard about what was happening with them and their illness. In both of the stories the narrators are shown to take actions and tried to be heard but they take this action violently towards the other characters.

The spirit of perverse played a huge role with the mental illness because both of the narrators know they are doing the wrong but had the need to harm and take action. For example in the story “The yellow wallpaper” when John didn’t allow her(The narrator) to write she felt the need to go behind his back and do it since she felt it was curing her. As well with the narrator of “The black cat” he felt as if nobody was watching him struggle with his illness of alcoholism and high temperament. Both of the characters took actions with their own hands not caring who they hurt or if they hurt themselves.

The spirit of Perverse vs. Mental Illness

As humans we all could relate how the spirit of perversity has affected our lives whether at a low cost or a large one. The story “The Black Cat” Edgar Allan Poe and “The yellow wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s both have a character who plays the part of spirit of perversity at a high level. The narrator in the story “The black cat” and the narrator in the story “The Yellow wallpaper” are both two characters whose behavior created many impacted moments in the story. Both of these characters took decisions and actions that needed to happen through the spirit of perversity. The spirit of perversity can be affected more when the characters are experiencing a mental illness.

The narrators of both “The black cat” and “the yellow wallpaper” suffer from mental health which creates a lot of violence and actions that harm themselves and their surroundings. In the story “The black cat” the narrator used alcohol to cure his depression and anxiety but alcohol also led him to be alone. In the story the narrator had his broken point and decided to push all his anger into Pluto” his cat. In the story the narrator describes the ways he tried to harm and attend to kill pluto. He knows it is wrong to harm Pluto but his impulsive actions made him do it.

The narrator in “The yellow wallpaper” shows the readers how the spirit of perversity can be affected more when the person has a mental illness. In the story the narrator suffered from a depression or a postpartum depression. As the narrator explains her depression she was experiencing a lot of anxiety attacks and began to cured herself through writing about the yellow wallpaper in her room. Her husband John tried to cure her depression by keeping her out of writing but she refused and wrote behind him. The narrator had an illusion that thought the yellow wallpaper in her room was moving. She began to write about it and little by little began to pull the yellow wallpaper out.  As a comparison to the narrator of the story “The Black Cat” the narrator blames Pluto for all his misfortunes and finds every excuse to blame him. The narrator creates this mentality that the cat is his enemy.

Coffeehouse #3

In the story A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner (published 1930) the character Emily Grierson had a lot of redemption in the story. One of them was Rose killing Homer to stay with him for eternity. Rose dreamed of getting married and being happy in that matter. Horner made her happy and he needed to stay with her so she prepared a wedding with him and poisoned him. Emily is seen as very high class and untouchable by anyone. A paradox in the story would be the town assuming Emily died thinking she was going to poison herself. They believe she was dead for a long time till they open the house doors and discover she didn’t die. Emily was there till old and died of a sickness while the town spoke all kinds of myths about her. They basically killed her by suspecting unreal things about her.

Coffeehouse #2

In the story “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings: A Tale For Children Gabriel Garcia Marquez” there’re many gothic characters that contribute to the meaning of the story. One of the characters is the “angel” the angel is a mysterious old man who is an angel but Father Gonzaga believes he might be a regular human being lying about his identity. In the story Peyalo and his wife Elisenda capture the angel that Payelo found in the courtyard. The characters in the story saw the Angel as another carnival person rather than respecting him. Payelo and Elisenda kidnapped the Angel and placed him in a chicken coop. When Elisenda saw that a lot of people were coming to see the angel she started charging 5 cents to everyone that came. While collecting that money the couple  raised a lot of money from the angel pain and miss fortune and constructed a house with all the money. Pelayo and Elisenda for me are the villain in the story because they took advantage of the angel and mistreated him and let others mistreat the angel for the money. In the story “The house of Asterion” Jorge Luis Borges the character plays a mysterious role where people in around him believe different things about him. The character enjoys being alone since for him he had a lot to do by himself in his house. In one paragraph he speaks about running after his shadow in the courtyard pool. The character is focusing a lot on the Asterion numbers and how time is calculated around him which is infinity.

The plot point in the story “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” is at the end when the angel starts growing wings after being at the edge of death due to the winter temperatures. The angel hid his feathers growing and one day he flew away from the chicken coop. In the story “The house of Asterion” the gothic plot is every nine years nine men go to the house to be free from all their evil. He celebrates a ceremony to free them, he also heard them running through the galleries walls but can’t see them.

One of the Gothic settings in the story “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” is the chicken coop where the angel was kept. The chicken coop was visited throughout the day. In there the angel received bad treatment and even stones were thrown at him and burned with an iron because he wouldn’t show his wings. The gothic setting of the story “The house of Asterion” is a house with no doors which has infinity halls. The house is designed in a way that does not trap anyone. There’s a courtyard with a pool, a stone gallery. The house reminds me of a puzzle there’s a solution but you must work to find it.

Coffeehouse 1

This summer was such a rollercoaster but now that it is over I did many fun and interesting things even though a lot was happening around us. I tried to maintain myself busy with different activities or just unnecessary shopping. One interesting thing I did this summer was moving from Brooklyn to Long island. The excitement of moving and to begin a new life got me very excited and full of fun emotions which by the way it was the first time since january. I got to decorate, buy, and do a lot of fixing which I didn’t mind because it kept me occupied.

The story that got most of my attention would be the Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe the different meanings and themes and chaos is interesting and the way that the main character acts got my attention. The story did drag my attention from the beginning when the narrator expresses his childhood and paragraph after paragraph all that happiness began downfalling to this bipolar/angry character. The story gives the readers suspense and questionable thoughts of why the main character acts the way he does. He’s passion for animals began to be abusive due to his alcoholism issues and anger issues which caused him to kill Pluto and lose the house. The main character explained that everytime he had the panic attacks “demons” would take over his body and attack. Those scenes grab my attention and I wanted to continue reading and finding out what was causing his temperament changes. The story is sure one of my favorite because it showed how someone with a happy life and zero issues could later on experiences choas and emotions changes.
