Why a place-based learning hub?

As regular instructors of Learning Places: Understanding the City – LIB2205ID – since 2015, we want to share what we have learned and create a space for the exchange of ideas and experiences to make place-based learning as meaningful and engaging as possible for everyone. We developed the place-based learning hub and the LIB2205ID model course together so that all instructors of LIB2205ID and of courses that make use of place for teaching and learning have access to support and resources.

This place-based learning hub consists of the following sections:

The LIB2205ID model course can be cloned and used by any LIB2205ID instructor. Model courses on the OpenLab provide instructors with a framework and resources for the entire semester, completely customizable for their course.

Find in-class and in-the-field activities and assignments you can adapt (or use as-is) on the Activity Prompts page, as well as links to assignments from past LIB2205ID instances.

The Field Trips page has information about how to plan and conduct an off-campus learning experience, whether a walking tour, cultural institution, museum, archive, library, or other organization.

Under Resources, you will find cultural and institutional resources that we have worked with in the past, visual resources you can access remotely, and written resources, including books and articles, that you can assign to your students or read for your own understanding of place-based education. Whenever possible, we’ve linked to content that is freely available online, or we’ve shared the library’s licensed resource that you can access by logging in with your CUNYFirst credentials. A few recommended books and films are available as physical copies in the City Tech library. Librarians at City Tech are glad to help you find resources for learning and teaching; connect with them via Ask a Librarian chat.
