Research Paper

Many people have seen the animation, it will bring people stories. Good stories bring people thinking and feeling. Hayao Miyazaki is a person who can bring different good stories to people. His animation films will give people a different understanding at different ages. For example, his famous movie “Spirited Away”. Children in kindergarten who just started enlightenment may only remember that the film tells a bit scary story after watching it for the first time; When you watch it again in primary school, you will find that the film is an inspirational story about the heroine’s bravery to her parents; When you watch it for the third time in high school, you will find that the film tells a lot of truth that is suitable for life or makes people think. Hayao Miyazaki has a lot of fantastic ideas. And he collected them writes a complete story and deduces a film. His stories and ideas will also bring inspiration and Enlightenment to people.

When Hayao Miyazaki was a child, he moved out of his original residence (a town of Utsunomiya) because of the war. At the same time, he also witnessed the recovery and rapid development of his home after the war. Therefore, he has repeatedly expressed his anti-war views, and his works always adhere to moving stories, warm painting style, and anti-war peace thought. Hayao Miyazaki’s animation works mostly involve the relationship between human beings and nature, pacifism, and the feminist movement. The style of Hayao Miyazaki’s animation is not the kind of plot with cool pictures and the exciting theme of ‘conquest’. But is a more childlike and warm painting style narrates a plot about self-worth confusion or self breakthrough. For example, you can refer to “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Spirit Away”.

In his works, he likes to choose female characters like the protagonist of the story. In an interview, he said,” when we compare a man in action and a girl in action, I feel girls are more Galant. If a boy is walking with a long string, I don’t think anything particular, but if a girl is walking gallantly, I feel “that’s cool.” If the story mode of traditional narration is, goal- obstacle- overcoming- completion- new goal- infinite loop. Then Hayao Miyazaki’s narrative mode is doubt – Interpretation – New doubt – New Interpretation – infinite cycle.

Hayao Miyazaki’s works have also inspired a new generation of painters, John Lasseter and Makoto Shinkai. In 1981, John Lasseter first came into contact with Hayao Miyazaki’s work, “The Castle of Cagliostro.”  In the interview, he said, “It had a very strong effect on me because I felt that this was the first animated feature film I had seen that had the vision to entertain for all ages. It made me feel that I was not alone in the world. It filled my soul with a drive that said ‘this is what I want to create.” After a while, John Lasseter released his work “Toy Story”. Makoto Shinkai is the director of your name in 2016. Regarding Hayao Miyazaki’s influence on him, he responded in this way: “You’ve got the create something different… But… I do want to trigger emotions like his films triggered our emotions.” In conclusion, Hayao Miyazaki triggered their desire for creation and their ideas and inspiration for their works.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the greatest animation directors in Japan and the leader of Ghibli studio, one of the animation film studios. In addition to the animation director, he also is a producer, animator, story narrator, and cartoonist. Hayao Miyazaki was born in Tokyo on January 5, 1941. He is the son of Katsuji Miyazaki, who works for the family business Miyazaki aircraft company, which makes fighter parts. At that time, to avoid the U.S. bombing of Tokyo, and also want to be close to Miyazaki Airplanes factory in Kanuma City, the Miyazaki family moved to Utsunomiya city. In college, Hayao Miyazaki did not study animation-related majors at first but majored in economics and politics. What makes him interested in the animation industry is a film called Hakujaden (Legend of the White Snake), which is the first color-long animation in Japan. However, Hayao Miyazaki did not want to be an animator, but a cartoonist.

In 1963, newly graduated Hayao Miyazaki became an animator of Toei animation, starting from the bottom and learning the basic knowledge of animation. He quickly mastered the knowledge of making animation and using this knowledge. His excellent painting ability impressed his colleagues, and his rich imagination provided many creative stories for the studio. In 1971, Hayao Miyazaki moved to A Pro studio to work. In 1979, he moved to the Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed his first film, the classic Lubang III: The Castle of Cagliostro. In the early 1980s, he began to create one of his most popular comic series, based on the character  Nausicaä, a princess living in the future in which mankind is in danger of extinction. In 1984, he released Nausicaä of wind Valley, adapted from his cartoon of the same name. The success of this film led to the establishment of a new animation studio Ghibli.

Hayao Miyazaki and his partners directed, wrote, and produced many animation films together. These animation films have achieved great success. In particular, Hayao Miyazaki’s ghost princess (1997) won the Japanese film award equivalent to the Japanese Academy Award for best picture. It is a domestic film with the highest box office (about US $150 million) in Japan. Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films”The Wind Rise” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” were nominated for the best-animated feature film of the year in 2014 and 2006 respectively. In 2003, Hayao Miyazaki’s animation “Spirit Away” won the best-animated feature film of the year Oscar. On January 14, 1998, Hayao Miyazaki announced that he would leave the Ghibli studio. Because his eyesight has decreased, he thinks he can’t guarantee the artistic quality of the film as he wants. However, on January 16, 1999, he returned as the spiritual leader of Ghibli studio and played an important role in maintaining organizational discipline and keeping employees focused on their tasks.

Hayao Miyazaki’s works, as long as you feel a story with your heart, you will find the beauty and significance of the world. Before being a good artist, the first thing to think about and determine is why you want to be an artist. As long as the original intention remains unchanged, persistence and efforts will be fruitful. Hayao Miyazaki’s works not only carry the profound thinking of dream and life, man and nature, survival and environment but also contain a cultural value of returning to children. This is also the message he wants to convey to people through his works. In other words, good artists need to think about how to integrate their own characteristics with the information they want to convey while thinking about the theme. Here is one of my favorite quotes, “Once you’ve met someone you never really forget them. It just takes a while for your memories to return.” – Zeniba, Spired Away, 2001. This is means as long as you have experienced, seen, heard, and touched, you will leave traces in your memory. When we meet it again, we would feel deja vu, but sometimes it takes longer to recall. Good works will leave a deep impression. After re-contact, you will recall your feelings and opinions at that time.
