My Experience at The Society of Illustrators Fieldtrip

My experience at The Society of illustrators has expanded my knowledge of both History and how life of illustrators is. The building has a long history and has served over time. The building today still serves a great purpose to both artists of the past and present.

The Society of Illustrators building histories dates back years and has changed over the course of time. In 1875 the building was originally for horse Carriage house. However in 1901 a group of artists and a businessman founded the Society of Illustrator to advertise the art of illustrators and present exhibitions daily and throughout time. During World war 1 group of artists were commission to do illustrated Ads for the US Army.   Throughout the time the building has exhibited various amounts of artist’s work with all kinds of pieces and still do in the present day. During the time before Cameras were more in demand Illustrators were hired and commission to do all kinds of work movie ads, cartoons in the News Papers,Political ads and book covers/magazines. In todays Market finding a illustrator is very difficult due low amount of artists who illustrate.

In the present time the Society of illustrators still stands today and still serves a well placed purpose. The building itself consists of 4 floors a few for displaying most of artwork and a Dinning section on the 2^nd floor. When exhibiting a persons artwork time is limited for the specific pieces due to space. So every often the exhibit is switched with different pieces. Most of the income the society of illustrators make is from entrance fees and fees from the artists who want to exhibit their work. The dinning section is used a lot for live drawings during the week, at other times they do all kinds of catering occasions. When an opportunity comes they buy pieces of art from artists that are rare to extremely rare. Estimates from the auctions can range from the thousands to sometimes millions. From the knowledge I have seen I can see this amazing place as one opportunity to display and promote my work.

In conclusion this place is somewhat of a strong hold for past and future illustrator artists. From its amazing beginning to its future of how it stands now. Its purposes and services to the artist community is well displayed.
