Self-Evaluation

Self-Evaluation of my learning and growth relating to the Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing

Education and nursing education for that matter is essential to the profession of nursing; not only as a means to gain the title of a registered nurse, but rather as a continuous learning process so as to be well equipped for the more complicated roles. This I can certainly admit that the Baccalaureate Nursing program in New York City College has really proven to do that. Looking back to the philosophy of the Baccalaureate Nursing Program, the faculty indeed did not fail to fulfill their beliefs, values and norms of education. One of the key messages on the quest to transform the nursing education (Robert Wood Foundation and the Institute of Nursing) stated that, nurses are required to “achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression” (IOM report, p.4). I can proudly say I have received that higher level of education and knowledge. Unlike the associate degree that focuses mainly on the technical aspect of nursing, the baccalaureate degree program, in addition to the practical aspect has given me an in-depth knowledge on social sciences, research, community and leadership training. The program has enlightened me to the fact that, nursing is not only by the bedside but goes beyond (communities, schools, homes, politics etc). The professional education has prepared me to be an expert in my practice. It has given me the ability to function independently in a variety of care settings (acute, long term, tertiary). With the knowledge of trans-culture, the program has taught and encouraged me to be culturally sensitive; most importantly, the ability to practice within multicultural, multi-ethnic and urban communities.

Overall, the baccalaureate nursing program has impacted in me a higher level of knowledge in nursing. The program has taught and encouraged me to value the norms of nursing and education, be culturally sensitive, use critical thinking, effective communication skills, evidence-based and research in my practice. It has also given me the ability to respond proactively (politics and policy) to nursing issues.
