Course Materials

The course also introduces the basics of Mathematica, a mathematical computation program, which is employed in the lectures to help students to improve their skills in understanding the economic models through simulations. The entire lecture notes for the course are written in dynamically generated interactive Mathematica note- books and distributed before each class. They are also distributed in the portable document format (pdf). To be able to read the course materials written in Mathematica applications on your own PC, you need to have at least Computable Document Format Player (CDF Player) installed on your personal computer. It is available for free at https://www.wolfram.com/cdf-player/.

CDF Player will allow you to read Mathematica notebooks that will be provided in the lectures but it will not allow you to edit them. To be able to edit them you need to have the program itself installed on your own personal computer. Note that Mathematica is not a free software. However, as CityTech students, you have sufficient privilege to install it freely as CUNY does have access to local student installs. You can create an account by using your CityTech email address and request access through the below link. You can also find the instructions to install Mathematica on the Blackboard.

The lecture materials also include some notes prepared in Microsoft Excel to introduce you some other useful ways on how to draw simple supply and demand curves, productions possibilities frontier, etc. You can visit the link below and receive a free copy/license of Microsoft Office 365 for Education on your personal computers. The service includes Office Online (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote), unlimited OneDrive storage, Yammer, and SharePoint sites. Just as in Mathematica, all that required is your valid citytech.cuny.edu email address, which you’ll be prompted to enter into the Microsoft website. Additional information about the software and eligibility is available on the below Microsoft website.
