This spe­cial top­ics course of­fers an in­ter­dis­ci­pli­nary ap­proach to in­ves­ti­gat­ing our built en­vi­ron­ment using a case study fo­cused on a spe­cific place each se­mes­ter. This course com­bines phys­i­cal ex­am­i­na­tion with in­for­ma­tion re­search and data col­lec­tion using method­olo­gies de­vel­oped in mul­ti­ple dis­ci­plines. Stu­dents from a va­ri­ety of de­part­ments en­gage in on-site ex­plo­ration and in-depth re­search of a lo­ca­tion in New York City.

This special topics course offers an interdisciplinary approach to investigating our built environment using a case study focused on a specific place each semester. This course combines physical examination with information research and data collection using methodologies developed in multiple disciplines. Students from a variety of departments engage in on-site exploration and in-depth research of a location in New York City.

Stu­dent is as­signed to find field­work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately eight hours per week at an in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the De­part­ment In­tern­ship in­struc­tor. Ap­proved Sites in­clude ad­ver­tis­ing agen­cies, graphic de­sign firms cor­po­rate or non-profit de­sign of­fices, pub­li­ca­tions art de­part­ments, pho­tog­ra­phy or il­lus­tra­tion stu­dios, TV or mul­ti­me­dia pro­duc­tion com­pa­nies. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab. A por­tion of the class will be de­voted to pre­sent­ing and shar­ing ex­pe­ri­ences with class­mates. Stu­dents will learn how to as­sess their tal­ents, up­date their re­sume, and pro­mote them­selves and their work through so­cial net­works dur­ing class meet­ings. Stu­dents will be re­quired to ex­tend their net­work­ing con­tacts using LinkedIn.

Student is assigned to find fieldwork/study situations of approximately eight hours per week at an internship site approved by the Department Internship instructor. Approved Sites include advertising agencies, graphic design firms corporate or non-profit design offices, publications art departments, photography or illustration studios, TV or multimedia production companies. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Openlab. A portion of the class will be devoted to presenting and sharing experiences with classmates. Students will learn how to assess their talents, update their resume, and promote themselves and their work through social networks during class meetings. Students will be required to extend their networking contacts using LinkedIn.

This course is de­signed to pre­pare the stu­dent for entry into the pro­fes­sional world of il­lus­tra­tion. De­vel­op­ment of a port­fo­lio demon­strat­ing a high level of skill and a per­sonal style, as well as the abil­ity to dis­cuss the work in for­mal and con­cep­tual terms is the pri­mary focus. Ad­di­tion­ally, the stu­dent will be in­tro­duced to a va­ri­ety of pro­fes­sional prac­tices and de­velop a fa­mil­iar­ity with the local, re­gional and na­tional scenes. The port­fo­lio con­tents should demon­strate the stu­dent’s ver­sa­til­ity and ad­vanced skills while demon­strat­ing con­sis­tency in pre­sen­ta­tion. This course is designed to prepare the student for entry into the professional world of illustration. Development of a portfolio demonstrating a high level of skill and a personal style, as well as the ability to discuss the work in formal and conceptual terms is the primary focus. Additionally, the student will be introduced to a variety of professional practices and develop a familiarity with the local, regional and national scenes. The portfolio contents should demonstrate the student’s versatility and advanced skills while demonstrating consistency in presentation.
