In EN­G2570, we will hone writ­ing skills that are often used in the work­place. Through eight units of study, we will cre­ate var­i­ous de­liv­er­ables (busi­ness let­ters, memos, min­utes, process pa­pers, and re­ports) and think through how best to har­ness the power of word choice, tone, ap­proach, re­vi­sion, and fol­low-through. • unit 1: an­no­ta­tion, MLA ci­ta­tion, best prac­tices • unit 2: or­ga­ni­za­tion • unit 3: re­vi­sion • unit 4: au­di­ence and pur­pose • unit 5: process pro­ject • unit 6: re­ports • unit 7: meet­ings and col­lab­o­ra­tion • unit 8: re­flec­tion and pre­sen­ta­tion Units 2-4 and 6-7 will re­quire the prepa­ra­tion of short re­sponse pa­pers that re­flect an un­der­stand­ing of one or more of the de­liv­er­ables named above. Unit 5 will cul­mi­nate in the cre­ation of a process pro­ject, and unit 8 will re­sult in self-re­flec­tion and a brief pre­sen­ta­tion.

Work­ing in­di­vid­u­ally or in teams, stu­dents con­sult with a va­ri­ety of clients on the de­sign and pro­duc­tion of a range of print and dig­i­tal media in­clud­ing logos, posters, web sites, ad­ver­tis­ing cam­paigns, brochures and other pro­mo­tional ma­te­ri­als. Stu­dents are re­spon­si­ble for col­lect­ing re­search, con­duct­ing meet­ings, mak­ing pre­sen­ta­tions and fol­low­ing client guide­lines. The role of dead­lines and bud­gets is stressed. Stu­dents are ex­pected to be in­volved in all phases of pro­duc­tion.

COMD 4900 D032 [7529], In­tern­ship in Com­mu­ni­ca­tion De­sign, Sum­mer 2016

In­tern­ship in Ad­ver­tis­ing Graphic De­sign As­sign­ment to field work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately eight to ten plus hours per week at a graphic arts-re­lated in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the de­part­ment in­tern­ship di­rec­tor. Sites may be in areas such as ad­ver­tis­ing, print­ing, cor­po­rate com­mu­ni­ca­tions or pub­lish­ing. Stu­dents keep a log/jour­nal to be shared in group sem­i­nars/dis­cus­sions. Su­per­vi­sion is by fac­ulty and by the job su­per­vi­sor. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab.

Web 3 – Fall 2015 – COMD 3652-E270

This is an in­ten­sive course in de­sign and de­vel­op­ment of dy­namic web­sites. The course of­fers a com­bi­na­tion of the­o­ret­i­cal and prac­ti­cal in­for­ma­tion on how to com­bine the PHP script­ing lan­guage with the MySQL data­base to pro­duce dy­namic web con­tent. Stu­dents are ex­pected to have in­ter­me­di­ate to ex­pert skills in HTML and CSS. The goal of the course is to give stu­dents the ex­pe­ri­ence of de­sign­ing dy­namic web con­tent and demon­strate tasks such as gen­er­at­ing im­ages dy­nam­i­cally, send­ing and man­ag­ing email, fa­cil­i­tat­ing user dis­cus­sions and man­ag­ing con­tent. The pur­pose is to learn a pro­fes­sional ap­proach to web­site con­cep­tu­al­iza­tion and ex­e­cu­tion.
