Working individually or in teams, students consult with a variety of clients on the design and production of a range of print and digital media including logos, posters, web sites, advertising campaigns, brochures and other promotional materials. Students are responsible for collecting research, conducting meetings, making presentations and following client guidelines. The role of deadlines and budgets is stressed. Students are expected to be involved in all phases of production.

Internship in Advertising Graphic Design Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately eight to ten plus hours per week at a graphic arts-related internship site approved by the department internship director. Sites may be in areas such as advertising, printing, corporate communications or publishing. Students keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars/discussions. Supervision is by faculty and by the job supervisor. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Openlab.

Through eight units of study, we will create various deliverables (business letters, memos, minutes, process papers, and reports) and think through how best to harness the power of word choice, tone, approach, revision, and follow-through. • unit 1: annotation, MLA citation, best practices • unit 2: organization • unit 3: revision • unit 4: audience and purpose • unit 5: process project • unit 6: reports • unit 7: meetings and collaboration • unit 8: reflection and presentation Units 2-4 and 6-7 will require the preparation of short response papers that reflect an understanding of one or more of the deliverables named above. Unit 5 will culminate in the creation of a process project, and unit 8 will result in self-reflection and a brief presentation.

The course offers a combination of theoretical and practical information on how to combine the PHP scripting language with the MySQL database to produce dynamic web content. Students are expected to have intermediate to expert skills in HTML and CSS. The goal of the course is to give students the experience of designing dynamic web content and demonstrate tasks such as generating images dynamically, sending and managing email, facilitating user discussions and managing content. The purpose is to learn a professional approach to website conceptualization and execution.
