This course provides an overview of existing psychological and epidemiological findings on the relationship between behavior and disease. The course explores how behavior, emotion and cognition can influence disease processes and examines the impact of stress and perceived control of one’s destiny on coronary, immune and infectious diseases and symptoms. The biological processes of several relevant chronic illnesses are covered as well as related racial and social economic health disparities. Templates for understanding and treating chronic illness including social support, referral and interventions for optimal physical and mental health are discussed. The interdisciplinary theme of this course will provide an overview of extant literature on theories of health psychology within the context of critical race theory, epidemiology, research methods, philosophy of science, biological anthropology, sociology, as well as applied health/medical fields for an enriched understanding of the biopsychosocial approach to health and illness. Lectures and in-class activities as well as films, guest lecturers, and interactive computer programs make up this textbook-free course with required readings made available through CityTech’s OpenLab and Open Educational Resources (OER).
Biology 1101 is an introductory Biology course. It focuses on the fundamental principles of biology, including taxonomy, structure, reproduction, heredity, development and evolution. Since Biology is governed by Chemistry, a large emphasis will be placed on basic Chemistry early in the course.
Learning Outcomes:

4. Organization of cells and classification of organisms based on cellular complexity and organization

8. Molecular Biology (DNA, gene function, gene regulation)
9. Biotechnology and Genomics
The Laboratory associated with this course is meant to reinforce the concepts learned in the lecture and to provide hands-on experience in scientific inquiry and exploration. From the laboratory component, we will better understand data acquisition and data analysis. Most importantly, communication of the findings in the lab will demonstrate the full understanding of learned concepts.
Topics covered in this course include sample spaces and probabilities, discrete probability distributions (Binomial, Hypergeometric, Poisson), expectation and variance, continuous probability distributions (Normal, Chi- Square), confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and correlation and regression. Spreadsheets are used throughout the semester. This course, (3 credits, 2 class hrs, 2 lab hrs), satisfies Pathways: Scientific World. Course prerequisite: MAT 1375; Not open to students who have completed MAT 2572.
