This spe­cial top­ics course of­fers an in­ter­dis­ci­pli­nary ap­proach to in­ves­ti­gat­ing our built en­vi­ron­ment using a case study fo­cused on a spe­cific place each se­mes­ter. This course com­bines phys­i­cal ex­am­i­na­tion with in­for­ma­tion re­search and data col­lec­tion using method­olo­gies de­vel­oped in mul­ti­ple dis­ci­plines. Stu­dents from a va­ri­ety of de­part­ments en­gage in on-site ex­plo­ration and in-depth re­search of a lo­ca­tion in New York City.

This special topics course offers an interdisciplinary approach to investigating our built environment using a case study focused on a specific place each semester. This course combines physical examination with information research and data collection using methodologies developed in multiple disciplines. Students from a variety of departments engage in on-site exploration and in-depth research of a location in New York City.

An in­tro­duc­tion to basic ma­te­ri­als of con­struc­tion and the fun­da­men­tal prin­ci­ples of archi- tec­tural hand draft­ing and sys­tem analy­sis. The course­work in­cludes sur­vey­ing ex­ist­ing con­di­tions, de­vel­op­ment of draw­ings of plans, el­e­va­tions, sec­tions, and basic de­tails from foun­da­tion to roof as well as the study of mate- rial prop­er­ties and ap­pli­ca­tions with an em­pha­sis on wood and ma­sonry and shal­low foun­da­tion sys­tems.

An introduction to basic materials of construction and the fundamental principles of archi- tectural hand drafting and system analysis. The coursework includes surveying existing conditions, development of drawings of plans, elevations, sections, and basic details from foundation to roof as well as the study of mate- rial properties and applications with an emphasis on wood and masonry and shallow foundation systems.
