Bio

My name is Sabina Cormier, I was born in Port au Prince, Haiti. I am a Christian Catholic and speak French, Creole, English and well versed in Spanish. I have been married for more than 15 years with two beautiful daughters. I have a passion for education, helping and caring for others which drove me to become a nurse. These characteristics power my drive to make a difference in the world and in people’s lives. There is just something about gaining new knowledge that makes me feel complete.
I have been practicing as an RN for almost 11 years now. I currently hold a BSN from NYC College of Technology with aspirations of attaining a higher degree. I have been employed at New York-Presbyterian Columbia since 2015; prior to that, I worked at Kings County Hospital Center from 2013 to 2015, and I began my Nursing career at Town House Extended Care for Rehabilitation and Nursing in 2010 and worked there for three years.
One of the biggest challenges throughout my journey was learning English; I came to the US at the age of fifteen and was determined to succeed. Within the next few years, I managed to learn English, the American culture, graduate HS, and College. Looking back at this voyage and thinking of all the obstacles that I had to overcome, I am optimistic and confident that my dream of having my doctorate in Nursing is achievable. One of my core principles is the notion that a nurse needs to be proactive and responsible for their own actions. I strongly believe that nurses have the morale pledge to exercise the ethical concept of beneficence and judgment in nursing care in order to reduce liability. Also, nurses need to utilize every patient contact as a unique way to uphold our profession. I believe in the idea that nurses need to continue their education in order to provide better care, educate, advocate and to be deemed competent in the profession. I view patients as unique individuals with distinctive needs.
I incorporate my nursing skills in my everyday life. Thanks to that approach, I was able to help pinpoint and assist in the diagnosis of my youngest daughter with Wilms tumor. Today, I am incredibly grateful that she is a cancer survivor after three years. Assisting my daughter with her fight against cancer contributes to my pursuit of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program which in turn; will be the beginning of my personnel mission to help, educate and treat patients and support families with similar conditions.
