This site is designed to help you find fieldwork/study situations of approximately eight hours per week at an internship site approved by the Department Internship instructor such as an advertising agency, graphic design firm, corporate design office, publications art department, photography or illustration studio, TV or multimedia production company. Students will be required to keep a learning journal of their internship in the form of a blog using Openlab. A portion of the class will be devoted to presenting and sharing experiences with classmates. Students will learn how to assess their talents, update their resume, and promote themselves and their work through social networks. Students will be required to setup and maintain at least two social media networks such as: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. The instructors for this class are there as mentors if you have not yet found an internship before registering for the course. However, the instructors do not find an internship placement for you. It is your responsibility to find a position that fits your personal career path and help you transition to full time employment upon leaving the halls of CityTech. Ideally, you will use this site to find an internship the semester before taking the COMD 4900 class.

Internship in Communication Design Online Mix (OM) Writing Intensive 2 cl hrs, 120 field hrs/semester (BFA degree) Assignment to fieldwork/study situations of approximately 12+ hours per week at an internship site approved by the department Internship Coordinator: an advertising agency, graphic design firm, corporate design office, publications art department, photography or illustration studio, TV or media production company. Each student keeps a blog/journal to be shared in group seminars. Supervision is by faculty and by the supervisor at the internship site. The class is a hybrid class. Internships may be undertaken during the spring, summer and fall semesters. Prerequisites: COMD 3701 or COMD 4701 or department approval. In this course students will learn how to embark on the branding process for an invented company or institution from start to finish, culminating in a finished set of brand guidelines and extension project. Each weeks’ lesson will build on top of the other, giving students a full understanding of what it would be like to not only create an identity design, but an entire branding system, using a real-world model typical with most branding studios and agencies. Students explore the role of professional designer as they are challenged to create a comprehensive, multi-piece presentation showcasing all aspects of their invented company. To start each student will receive a client type that they must base their invented company on. There will be at least 1 other student in the class with the same business type, creating a cohort. The idea is that throughout the process each student can have creative brainstorming sessions with their cohort, which is something that is very common practice among design teams in the professional world. Students will also learn about tools they can use to enhance their brainstorming sessions like Pinterest and Miro, which will help them throughout the semester.

This beginning photography course explores the foundational concepts of light and exposure. Using dSLR cameras, professional lighting equipment and software*, the student develops compositional skills and the ability to control photographic style to create visually engaging photographs. *if this course is being held online due to an emergency, students will meet learning outcomes using alternate tools and equipment.
